I've exhausted the internet for a definitive guide to removing the gear selector on my A6 Tip and haven't found anything concrete, I've bought a replacement leather/perforated one (RS6) to swap with my current Birchwood one, so its a like for like swap.

Has anyone got any ideas before i go at it with a flathead screwdriver, a blowtorch and dirt rag?

    i) Make sure parking brake on... move gear lever to N...

Engine does not need to be started... just turn ignition to just before starting and press brake pedal to get to N...

ii) the boot for gear lever needs to be unclipped... two points either side across long side...

iii) just like how your new gear lever has the push button engaged outwards that is what you must do to old one... guide suggest a cable tie between the gap of trim and button... the push button is part of locking system for gearknob... do not pull out fully only enough to get cable tie in...

iv) turn boot up over gear stick and you will find a clip holding gearknob to stick...

    v) refit reverse

If you want the PDF with images... which includes more detail/tips/warnings... PM external email...

Otherwise search gearbox sections here Link:- Online Repair Manual

Someone PM be above website ... bit or a mare to search but can be handy

That's awesome, thanks so much. Will do that tomorrow morning. With the new retrimmed steering wheel next week (alcantatra and perforated leather) the cars starting to take shape.

can you shed any light on the clip part, it's like a jubilee clip and it won't really move and I don't want to break it. everything else was plain sailing up to this point.

All done removed the metal clip (replaced it with a cable tie upon refitting the new one) a bit fiddly but not too bad. Pics below.

20121103_103455.jpg Removed trim with a flat headed screwdriver, very easy to pry open. Then pulled out silver button and placed cable tie inside to stop it pinging back.

20121103_105245.jpg Turned up the leather boot and after trying to pull the gear knob off, I ended up removing the silver jubilee clip entirely. On the refit i used a cable tie to keep it firmly in place.

20121103_113511.jpg Slipped on the new gear knob (make sure the leather boot is lined up properly and facing the right way) and that the trim is firmly clicked back into place, the leather boot can pull on the trim when extended down to S Mode, so get everything in place and leave trim to last.

Huge thanks to Gupsterg for the online advice and the PDF he sent to me.
