A3. 2.0 tdi 170 s line - engine noise and poss gearbox/clutch issue

Guys

Had noticed what could only describe as a whirring or even a grinding noise when driving, noticeable more at low speeds as less road/ traffic noise... Annoying and definitely not there a few months ago....

When accelerating through 1-2-3-4 etc... And when coasting a little ... With Clutch in... Noise goes....

If I'm stationary and not in gear and rev. Sounds mint.....

My mate thought I was mad!!

So today whilst driving down motorway in 5th, put my foot down to pass a car and crunch...... The loudest grinding noise you can imagine and no power..... As if it's missed a gear or not in gear properly..... Dropped to 4th. No issues.... Limped off motorway and got home as was literally 1 mile away luckily...

Now.... The noise I had before has gone.... Good you might think! But it's now replaced with an even worse rattling / grinding noise when coasting or ticking over and a loud crunch when pushing clutch in.... Clutch also seemed a Little loose and minimal biting point.....

So.... Rattle/ crunching sound in tick over or moving.... Can't get to 5th . Just crunches and crunch/ rattle when dipping the clutch....

No management lights or even loss of power or anything when in 4th at the time etc.....

What do people think???? Gearbox ? Clutch? Something worse?!!?

Any suggestions would be appreciated as I guess it's sit n stress time until Monday and the garage opens!! When no doubt I will be forced to part with all of my Xmas savings

If it is the DMF then yes it will cost a bit, as when you fix that you might as well get a clutch too. To be fair, I would just take your car to a good garage and see what they think. Hope you get it sorted

Symptoms appear like there is gearbox problem.
