My W reg 1.9TDI 115 has started to intermittently shake whilst idling but only in warmer weather. It disappears when i dip the accelerator though. I have had the clutch and DMF done about 800miles ago so it isnt that. I have noticed that my temperature gauge doesn't sit still and slowly goes up and down, but it never goes above 90. Would this be related?

    Anyone got any ideas??

    thankyou

I owned a few audi 80 tdi,s that suffered from a hunting idle
the problem was in the fuel pump.
It may be possible your problem could be similar.

Hi I've got the same Audi as you the 115bhp.

Now when I bought mine temperature gauge was doing the same as yours. The thermostat is simply faulty. After replacing it from using eurocarparts, it failed a week a later. So I bought one of the main dealer I think it was a tenner, fine since. I would advise getting the main dealer one. Also it has increased my mpg by like 10-20 % as the engine was always trying to warm itself up so it used more fuel.

But please let me know about the rough idle if you find any solution to it. Mine also does that once in a blue moon.

I have a 99 avant 110 tdi AFN which has exactly the same problem. When the weather is above 19/20 dedrees the engine shakes at idle speed, a quick blip of the throttle temporally cures it. The car runs perfectly in cooler weather.
i would love to get to the bottom of it, my garage who normally can sort out hard to fix problems is at a loss.

The PD 115 is completely different to the AFN VE engine, the only thing they share is the block. With the PD engine the injector wiring loom is a known failure, take the rocker cover off and replace the loom- it's about 50 quid at the dealer and they do keep it in stock ! Whilst the rocker cover is off check the cam lobes for wear, the pd engine is very particular on oil quality and will munch the cam and lifters if improper grade used.
The AFN is much more robust and does not care about oil grade, the cam can withstand a nuclear blast and rocker needs replacing after 200-300 k. Rough iddle in these models can be due to:
-worn DMF, will manifest when hot
    -worn quantity adjuster/Fuel temp.sensor
-improper setting/timing of the injector pump
    -duff coolant temp sensor
    -duff MAF

The AJM/ATJ pd 115 engine can missfire due to:
    -Worn FMF
-improper timing/setting of the camshaft angle
    -duff CTS or MAF
    -duff injector wiring loom
    -worn injectors

In both cases a diagnostic scan may shed some light over the real cause...
