    Hi Guys,

I have recently got myself a 2007 A3 2.0 TDi 170 sportback and had a bad smell in the AC.

I did a full cleanse of the AC without the pollen filter and came round to putting a new one in its place after I completed the cleanse.

The problem I have is that common sense tells me that the airflow direction arrows of the filter should be pointing towards the inside of the car, rather than towards the engine bay, but the filter only seems to fit in with the airflow arrows pointing towards the engine bay (so thats the top slanty corner being on the left side when fitted)

Could someone do me a massive favour and have a look at their pollen filter for me, and let me know what direction the arrows point to on your pollen filter and where the top corner is?

    Thanks
    Ian

    Thanks

Its just in the passenger side footwell. There's a piece of foam just behind the footwell vents with 2 plastic screws (turn them with your fingers). It comes off after you remove the screws.

You then just slide the plastic cover that holds the filter in place to the left and pull down. The directional arrows should be located at the bottom of the filter and they either point towards the front or the rear of the car.

It would also be helpful if you let me know where the 'missing corner' is as the filter isn't quite square and one of the top corners is on a slant.

    Thanks very much!

Use common sense mate, it wont push in fully properly on 1 side if the slant is on the wrong side

Also the base of the filter has some slotted holes, make sure these line up properly aswell.

You can remove old & remember which way it goes in or get a torch & stick your nose in there to see where the slanted area is.

Yes I had a little blonde moment and forgot to keep track of the way it came out.

I used the most sense I could, so it only goes in (easily) one way and also, the slots only line up properly in one of the positions so I'm pretty certain I got it right.

The only weird thing is that the airflow directional arrows point towards the front of the car and I would have expected them to point towards the rear of the car(meaning the air is travelling towards the direction of the cabin rather than towards the engine bay)

OK...just adding my tuppence worth on this.

Does the air not come out of the air vents then? So it doesnt matter which way the arrows point does it - as once the cover is back in place, its effectively a sealed chamber or 'closed circuit' so the air will be ducted through the filter the way it is intended. from the matrix.

So as long as the filter goes in and you can put the cover on, its the right way round - if it helps, the angled bit goes to the Left! Simples....

Of course its dependent on the filter design in some systems, but yes agree on this, as long as its fitted with angle correct side & not just pushed in the hole, it will be fine, common sense does prevail.
