Hi all hope you can help!

I have a 2.0 tdi bre engine, and have noticed black soot around the left hand side of the engine. So I got the missus to give the car a bit of a rev and seen exhaust smoke blowing out. Would this be the exhaust manifold? I've took a pic to show the soot and location, any advice would be appreciated before I have to take it to audi to get it looked at.

    Thanks

I doubt it. It would have to be cracked, loose or gasket gone. All quite unlikely. Probably something like the EGR valve or similar ancillary connected to the exhaust.

I thought the egr was on the right hand side of the engine. Is it? That's my theory out the window lol! ! Do you think I should take it off and have a look?

Same thought here EGR valve or the flexi pipe shown in your picture, EGR valve could be blocked or stuck, maybe good idea remove, check clean it

It's the EGR cooler on the driver side, the exhaust pipe is known to fracture near the flexi section

Hi all thanks for all your input! Finally got to the bottom of the problem! On friday I took the egr off and cleaned it,it wasn't bad Today the car went into limp mode and wouldn't go over 3000 rpm so I took it to my mate and he noticed that one of the bolts that hold the shiny pipe on the top of the egr cooler was loose which was blowing out smoke into the engine bay and making the car run like a dog! So got it tightened up and the car is running much better now although I will need to take it off completely to clean the faces of the join as its still leaking very slightly.
So thanks again for all your help on this forum!!
