    Hi all

Just noticed something and would like some advise before i go back to dealers.

MOT failed in May on front 2 tyres, asked them to be replaced and they did.

I remember my tyres were 235/45/R17 97Y as i checked the prices only a few weeks before the MOT. And that's the tyres i have at the back.

I have just checked the tyres today and they have replaced with 235/45/R17 94Y. Not sure why they did that (maybe cause they're cheaper).

    Anyways is that OK?

Looking at replacing the back 2, should i keep the 97Y or changed also to 94Y?

    Thanks

Try checking the manual or label inside the fuel filler flap?

    Failing that, dealer?

Hmmm.......... interesting question. I'd be tempted to ask an MOT testing station if there is any prospect of a lower than recommended load rating being a failure possibility. I suspect not, although I was once told that a sub-spec speed rating can be a failure. Maybe it was hogwash.

I'll be interested to see what happens next week. I'm having two tyres replaced by the dealer after an advisory and the quoted price for a premium tyre is spectaularly cheap. I confirmed that it will be a Bridgestone/Pirelli/Michelin or such like before I booked it in. I'll be checking the load and speed rating (as well as the make) before I drive away.

Remembering previous threads this seems to be more of an issue wrt validity of Insurance as if you fit your car wih a lower index rating you may not be covered. You need to fit tyres as per factory fit or better.

I had a similar issue where the local tyre fitter put on '94's when I requested '97's but changed no hassle a day later!

    Thanks AJA

In my case, it was the dealers who fit them without my knowledge. Might drop them a line

£78 each. Best I could do through BlackCircles was £129. I thought it must be an error, but I've checked a previous MOT advisory quote for another of our cars and that was £74.

Can't remember the exact size but they are big beggars on the wife's car (at least as wide as my Passat Estate).

I suspect the dealer's no use to you - I drive an hour but it's about 3 hours from Chester. It's a long drive to save on the price of a tyre!!!
