    Hello,

I am wondering if anyone can help as I have had enough of this Audi.
I have a a4 tdi 170 avant q b7 and I am getting a strong smell of fumes inside and outside the car. The car has had four new injectors but that was another story. I was still getting the strong smell so after using a few local garages who found to be no problem I took it to Audi for a full service and the found the egr cooler to be leaking. This was replaced and the smell went away for two weeks but had returned today. Audi said it is supposed to be like that And it's the egr doing its job but by the time I drive to Audi the smell has gone. They also think the egr is leaking but a garage opened it and flushed it out so I am not sure if that's what Audi are seeing and they want 500 for a egr valve. It is real strong and in traffic I have to turn the car off before I gas the kids.
My mate has a garage and thinks it not running on all cylinders on fire up as the engine seems to be a bit rough but soon clears up.

Can anyone shed some light on my problem? It's never been remapped or chipped.

    Thank you

    Hi there,

The injector replacement could be the cause. If these weren't seated correctly, the there could be a minuscule air leak causing the poor running from cold and allowing stratified exhaust mixture out as well.
Obviously without seeing I wouldn't take this as gospel, but I would imagine it all to be linked.
Also worth checking the braided leak off pipes on the injectors aren't leaking at all. Quick visual inspection will do. See if there are any pools of diesel lyng underneath or if they are moist themselves as these can stink.

    Hope this helps.

    hello

your situation sounds very similar to mine. I have the same car and the smell of fumes from the exhaust is horrendous. Did you get to the bottom of the issue?

    thanks

    Hi

My audi had endless problems . The injectors were changed the egr cooler then I was told it was the egr before I had time to monitor and check it I traded it in before anything else went wrong . I know loads of people who have had trouble with them. It was the worst car I ever owned. I know have a Audi a5 petrol and fingers crossed no problems. I also have a a3 140 20 plate diesel and I have never put a spanner near it . If you have the 170 I would get rid of it . That only my opinion . What age of car do you have? And what is it? All the best

07, also had injectors done. It was recalled for that. Getting rid sounds like best advice, cheers

I have a A3 Sportback TDI 170 with occasional strong smell (bad combustion smell?!) when idling.
Injectors recall and injector seals and bolts already done at the dealer.

Did anyone find a cure for this?
    Thanks.

I've searched alot about this issue on the 2.0 TDI 170 BMN engine and nobody seems to have a clue of what causes it.
Injectors and seals already done twice. Engine timming fine tuned (solved 80% of the smell). My next suspect was DPF/CAT blocked but another user tried multiple DPF combinations (new used DPF, DPF with holes, etc) but the strong/acrid smell persists when idling...

Hi there, unsure if this will help or is the cause, but as posted above.......

I had issues with my Jag XJ, diesel fumes inside the cabin, also smell of fumes outside the car too.
These were coming from issues with the exhaust manifold, a crack in the flexi pipe was the cause.....fairly simple to resolve if so.

    Worth checking....

    Good luck
