    Hi,
I have had my golf Match since July 2011 and have only just noticed that the roof appears to have 'dents' in it. By dents I mean the metal roof panel is not flat and appears to be indented in several places in a fairly straight line across the roof in 2 rows. It looks like the metal is 'pulled down' in these places. The rows seem to be where there is a structural member running across the roof.
Has anyone else got these marks showing? Could they be where the roof skin is welded to the structural members? I was even wondering if it could be related to the really high temperatures this week (28 deg here and a black car) causing the car structure to expand?
I am sure that the car has not been damaged at all as it is only parked in very select places.

    Any ideas?
    Many thanks
    Ian

Should not be mon ami. Whether it is a structural member or not is neither here nor there, the roof structure should not show this. Even though we have had reasonably high temps should not be enough to expand the metal enough to cause this.
Personally I would be straight down to your dealer, whilst the weather is still hot to show them this metallic aberration. If it is a consequence of heat then you should ask them what they are going to do about it, and don't be fobbed off with some pathetic excuse. Take photographs of the roof soonest so that you have proof make sure you retain copies and supply the dealer with same an tell them you want a report sent back to VW to see what they have to say about it.
If you do not get a decent explanation then you have the photos to prove that there is something wrong with your roof and then you could, if you should so want, take it further by due legal process.
I wish you luck in your endeavours

I have a 2012 GTI 4 door with sunroof, black metallic paint, and I noticed this same thing on mine after we had a week of 100F + temps here in Nebraska. I'll take some pictures this weekend and post where I see the dents. While I'm irritated, it's really minor and not something I'm going to have the car taken in for and torn apart / etc to fix. It sounds like I'm not the only one.

When I upload the pic, can you tell me if this is exactly where your dents / deform of roof appear?

Of course. Oddly enough I only noticed my dents after a really hot spell here. They seemed to stay even after it cooled down. I have spotted another 2 black Mk6's with the same dents too! Ian

I have just noticed compression denting running across my roof too. There are two running parallel to each other approx. 6in from the windscreen and about 6in apart resembling a sort of' sunroof' indentation. I've taken my car to be inspected by a trim repair shop and they are going to try and use PDR but now I'm concerned this could be a design fault? I bought the car from a main VW dealer in Cambs area and am thinking of taking it back for them to inspect (although I'm not confident they will see the problem!). I thought that someone had dropped something heavy on my roof but can't see how or why.

It sounds to me that the roof skin is spot welded to some structural beams below. The heat (especially with black cars) has expanded the skin, which has pushed out against the beams underneath.

Definitely a design flaw. Are all the cars affected fitted with sunroofs?
