Rubbing/ screeching noise when steering wheel turned

Whenever I turn the steering wheel hard to the left or right there is a rubbing/ screeching sound that comes from the wheels. This happens when the car is stationary. Would anyone have any suggestions as to what is causing this?

Coming from the front wheels? Is it just the tyres rubbing on the tarmac? Does it do it if the car is rolling very slowly forward / backwards?

Is it as the steering wheel is turning, or when you get to full lock and the power steering pump starts whining? If it's the power steering pump screeching, check if the drive belt is flapping when on full lock - if it is, then it's likely to be a fault with the one way pulley on the alternator.

Yes, it sounds like it's the power steering pump on full lock. Does the noise stop if you turn the steering wheel back by about an inch?

If it's a loud whirring noise, then it's probably normal, but if it's screeching, then it's a problem. Have an assistant hold the steering wheel at full lock, and if the drive belt starts flapping, then see about getting the alternator pulley replaced.

You're spot on - I had the alternator pulley replaced and that resolved the problem.
