Well I have done it now. I changed the rear brake pads on my Passat 2008 wagon and thought I was doing everything right, but have now run into a problem. Here's the quick procedure, and the explanation of the problem.

    1. Used VCDS to move EPB motors into "open position". Heard motors open.
    2. Inadvertently reactivated motors into closed position with calipers off the rotors.
    3. Removed and changed the brake pads (had to manually open the EPB geared piston by removing the motors and manually turning the drive wheels).
    4. Parking brake "P" button light now flashes.

Now the brakes work fine, but the EPB does not work and the button is flashing.

Using VCDS now says "Channel not available" for 06, 07, and 10. When I do a "read" it shows the problem of why I can't get to them -- it says "Security Access Required" and I can't find the security access code (00000-99999) for the 53 - Parking Brake module. Note that hovering the mouse in the box does NOT pop up the security code like it does on other modules.

Googling is of no help, and the code is NOT 40168. I can't leave it blank either, as VCDS says it needs a number.

So at this point I'm going to have to drive around sans a parking brake, but am hoping someone might have some ideas on how to either reset the problem using VCDS or help me figure out how to find my 53-Parking Brake security access code.

Thank you so much for any assistance on this,

    Dennis McEntire

I would disconnect the battery leads and touch them together (not the battery) for a few seconds. Wait 5 minutes or so and reconnect the battery leads. Then run VCDS again and see what it says.
I don't recall vcds asking for security codes for epb. That is usually for abs if anything. The problem at the moment is; is it vcds being picky or is the controller playing up. Let us know how you get on.

    Hello all:

Pretty funny conclusion to this thread. So I actually got distracted by the whole VCDS and security code thing that I never actually did a road test other than a few feet in my driveway to confirm the brakes worked after the pads changed.

This morning I got in the car and as I pulled out of the driveway, the warning lights all went off. I stopped, pushed the parking brake and it ran for a bit, then locked. I was happy that things just "fixed themselves" without having to do anything. Now the EPB works fine, and the auto hold also works as before, everything is back to normal now.

Thanks for the help, and I hope this helps someone else down the line.

    Dennis
