Multitronic is the continuously variable transmission (CVT) and is fitted to front wheel drive cars. There are numerous reports of issues with some of the earlier examples fitted in B6 models. Tiptronic is a traditional automatic gearbox and is fitted to quattro models. It seems to be far more robust and reliable from what I can gather.

Think the gear lever's look the same. If you go for a Quattro, it will be the tiptronic box. If you go for the more comon 2WD it will be multitronic (cvt)

I have a later multitronic (2004 onwards) with sports mode. It's simply the smoothest auto I have ever owned or driven. You can also select a six speed tiptronic mode if you like to select your gears manualy.

Gear-lever is the same. 2wd = Multitronic, 4wd = Tiptronic. In operation they both do the same thing, just the Multitronic is better on the diesels than the tiptronic.

Just a wild guess, as I've never driven an Audi with auto gearbox, but did some other ones with gears and variator auto gearboxes: take it for test drive and see, if it changes revs when changing gears, it's tiptronic, if revs are same and speed increases, it's multitronic which is a variator gearbox with virtually no gears. Although it has a mode in which it acts as normal auto gearbox. Just make sure you don't floor it all the time, just take it handy and watch rev counter. Apart from that I don't think there's way to tell diff between those.
    Hope it helps

The two ways to tell the difference is. If there is a Quattro badge on the boot it will be conventional six speed auto. If you test drive in normal drive mode you will feel the gears changing.
If it's a 2wd cvt there will be no gear changes. However both gearboxes have six speed tiptronic mode allowing you to sellect gears manualy by flipping the gear leaver or steering wheel controls if fitted. Both boxes have kickdown in drive or sports mode. My cvt 'multitronic' box has excellent three stage kick down.

Yes - we do, and we told you already. Front wheel drive cars have the Multitronic box and quattro cars have the Tiptronic box. Simples.
