Hi all can some one tell me wether I have a cam belt or cam chain. I have a 3.0 Tdi cab b7 on a 2006 plate. Also if it is a cam belt what's a good price to have it replaced, I'm sure I've read that it needs changing at 70,000 miles and I'm on 67,000 miles now.
    Regards Liam

yep, definately chains and recommended replacement seems to be around the 180k to 200k though some done more, however I'll be making sure I have part ex'd it by then as apparently it's an engine out job and £1000+ bill

Have read that you should listen out for chain rattle on startup which can be an early sign of trouble. Apparently the chain tensioners have been known to go. If you search this I'm sure you'll find more info - I can't be sure I'm remembering exactly right.

EArly cars suffer from this as the tensioners back off once the oil presure drops, but so long as the rattle goes within a second its OK. There is a fix (fitted to later cars) but at £1000 as its an engine out job I put up with it on mine...

Mine clatter loudly for a second or two at startup 50% of the time.... makes me cringe! I'm worried that one day something in there will fail and my engine will be scrap

No need to Panic unless the noise doesn't go away at all, then its switch off the engine and quickly see your bank about a loan... Apparently they get to a point when they need changing from around 180K miles, depending on type of driving you have done. Will have sold mine before then hopefully
