The seals in my GT1749Va have gone but I'm not sure which way to go:

Midland Turbo will recon it for £185 or sell a reman unit for £380 but I still need a garage to remove it and replace it afterwards which may take time and tot up the labour costs.

Turbo Dynamics are offering brand new turbos for £470 but again I need a garage to do the change out.

What have you guys paid for this to be done and did they get the recon unit for you?
have you done it yourself? I've done a few turbo bikes which were a pleasure to work on but I find the hidden nature of this turbo to be a bit daunting to get to.

I've just spent a small fortune on getting long awaited attention paid to the car so I'd like to get a fair idea what I can expect to shell out for this job and what you think the best route is.

    Thanks in advance .

BTW: it is an '04 1.9TDi 130 with an ASZ engine.

Some scary news today - VW Notts say they will only replace the turbo with new at £1300!.
Called two local garages, one said they won't do it as the vehicle would have to remain in storage until the original turbo is reconditioned which could take a week or more turnaround and they'd charge me storage!
The other said it is about 5 hours labour to remove and refit at £50 p/h so if the original is good enough to recon then it is £185 plus the £250 labour - so just shy of £500.
I expect the value of the car is only about £2300 so it is really hard to justify paying this but it needs doing.
If anyone can offer advice on removal and refitting the turbo at home then please say so, I'm not an expert but I am capable of doing this as long as I don't need a vehicle lift and special tools.

Give us a call, (www.candrenterprises.co.uk) we will do the whole job for just under £900 with a rebuilt turbo and we won't charge you storage whilst it is being rebuilt. To get the turbo out you have a choice of removing the right hand drive shaft or the inlet manifold, I like to take them out from below.
