Finding the engine number

Hi

I don't have any history with my car and I want to find the codes for the engine and gearbox. I looked in the spare wheel well and there is a sticky mark where I assume a label was with the engine number. Where else is the number on the car?

Yes, you're correct that the label shows you the engine and gearbox codes, engine will be 3 letters, e.g. ATJ, and gearbox similar.

Post up the list for the label (also should be replicated in service/handbook) here, and then someone will decypher it for you.

Ah, then they are both stamped on the engine.gearbox, but don't ask me where!!

Try asking your local Audi dealer, they should be able to give you the history.

Engine code should be on your v5 under engine number. Iirc the first 3 letters will be the engine code.

If the car was serviced with Audi, then ring a dealer and they will be able to tell you as Hex says.

I haven't got the V5 yet just the little green slip. I'll try Audi

Just rang Audi, apparently my car has never been serviced by Audi. They did have the engine code - AWX. They didn't have the gearbox code, does anyone know what its likely to be? 2002 5 speed manual.
@Peter D, I looked in the spare wheel well and the label appears to have been rubbed off by the spare wheel
