    Hi there,

I've previously owned a C5 S6 and very much enjoyed driving it... just didn't enjoy the repair bills or the fuel "economy"

In fact, the S6 left my wallet feeling so abused, it converted me to Diesel.. I've had 3 A4 TDI's since. Whilst I'm very impressed with my current A4 1.9 TDI Quattro Avant, I need something slightly bigger and I really want to be back behnid the wheel of the 3.0 TDI again (but this time, in manual guise).

    So the car I'm after is a C6 - A6 Avant 3.0 TDI Quattro S-Line (Manual).

Please can any owners of the 3.0 TDI Quattro (manual or auto) give me an idea of servicing costs / general runnings costs / MPG? I used to get 550 miles from a tank in my A4 3.0 TDI Quattro saloon but I appreciate it's a lighter car.

Whilst I imagine the auto box suits the car really well, experience has taught me that I enjoy driving too much to let the car control the gears! I know it's not a car that can be chucked around but assuming it'll have the same auto box as my 55 plate A4 3.0 TDI, it'll jsut frustrate me when I'm driving enthusiasticly!

    Cheers
    Toff.

The a6 is not avaiable with the 3.0 tdi engine and 6 speed manual as far as i know, the engine is way to powerfull for a conventional clutch... The 2.7 quattro was available in manual guise but it's in a different league to the 3.0Tdi.

Ill have my 3.0TDi Auto for 3 years in April coming.

Fuel economy isnt too bad, I can get 40mpg on a long motorway run with CC on at 70-80mph. Around town this drops to 20-22mpg. What can you expect really? This is on my Auto car, the manual version may do a smidge more.

Im not sure what the yearly tax was on your S6 but mine is currently £260 or £240, I cant quite remember. Again, manual may be less.

Servicing, I've always gone to Audi for this. The first service whilst in posession of the car was a major service including brake discs. This cost ~£700 with the discs. That was in September 2010.

I had a service there in October 2011 and this was just routine. £299 because the car was over 3 years old.

Its due a service in 3000 miles, I think this is only a routine service too so it shouldnt be too dear. Although, being friendly with the service manager is always a good point

The engine is great, plenty of low down torque and good lift when the throttle in sank in the carpet 0-60 in around 6.5(?) seconds and a top speed of 155mph is something you cant complain about

I took out an Audi warranty on my car, this was £750 but it has saved me over £3k+ in repair costs between rear light clusters, MMI updates, suspension parts and the really expensive Intake Manifold Runners. This will be renewed at the end of Jan when the car is 4 years old.

The first MOT is also due 31st Jan (its 4 years in NI) and I have it booked into Audi for a MOT Prep with MOT Protection should it fail (which hopefully it wont!)

I can get about 500-600 miles per tank dependant on how its drove from the 80ltr tank which is standard on the 3.0TDi. Costs me about £100-£130 per tank to fill.

As you're looking a manual, it may actually do more to the tank than my Auto.

Tyres - I have 19" alloys on my car, tyres are VERY expensive for a set. I paid £1k (on offer!) in Jan2011 for 4 Michelin PS2's (255/35/19) and they still have 5mm tread left all round with 20k+ miles on them.

Before I had Goodyear Eagle F1s and they didnt even last the guts of 12k.

Comfort isn't too bad, the S-Line 20mm drop can be a bit harsh on some roads but on motorways and A roads, its not actually too bad. There is alot of road noise from my alloys/tyres though, although I am use to this now.

I also have Audi mudflaps, when the car is loaded with 4 people and luggage, they can sometimes catch on the road if going over bumps, but again, I have become use to this.

I have my eye on the new C7, so maybe around summer time, I may be changing. But I will never forget how pleased I am with the car, performance, comfort and reliability wise.

I have to say coming from a Mondeo, its a great car, everything I want in a car.

    Any more questions, please ask

EDIT - Adams24, the 3.0TDi is avaliable with a manual box

EDIT #2 - My tax is £260/pa January 2008 car

It might be the new low CO2 engines if it's available in manual guise, every 3.0 tdi A6 i've been in (10 or so) were auto... The a4 was available with manual 6 speed gearbox since 2005 !

I had a 56 plate version, sold just before Christmas. Certainly at that date the 3.0TDI was the smallest diesel available with manual and Quattro and I wanted to avoid the auto (which was the only option with the 2.7TDI). Average fuel consumption over 60K miles was 35.5mpg. (I prefer to give MPG - miles per tank depends on tank size! 80 litre tank was standard on the Quattro at that time, though). I didn't have any major faults to fix although over time it did have brake discs changed and some front suspension arms changed. I've had a couple of Quattros (the C6 and a C5 before that) and both developed a slight wheel wobble at cruising speed as they aged and I suspect that this was suspension wear-related. I don't have the service records any more as they went with the car but I never felt that servicing costs were silly prices at my local Audi dealer given the kind of car we're talking about - it ain't no Focus!

I liked it so much that I've just bought a new A6 but auto this time as there is no choice. I actually find it pretty good, and on those odd occasions when I want to take control, there are the paddles.

Hi, I upgraded from a 3.0TDI A4 auto avant to a 15 month old auto A6 avant, with 10k on the clock. Have now done a further 9k in the A6 (also 3,0TDI, S Line, auto) with almost no complaints. Overall I have done 39.7 mpg. Did a 150 mile run today (mostly motorway) and was showing 46.3 mpg when I arrived home (with 60 miles of that round the M25, some of which in the roadworks), driving sensibly but not particularly slowly.

1st service is next week for which I will be paying about £360 but can't really complain as it's on long life servicing and my mileage justifies that.

Yes, running costs are higher than the A4 but not dramatically so. Suspension is harder, as had been commented on elsewhere, but I have got used to it. The A4 was particularly good suspensionwise I felt (it was an 08 model), the A6 is more jiggly but it is OK. Should be better once I change the original Pirelli P Zero Neros, which I don't like (big fan of Vredestein Sessantas, which worked well on the A4).

Really endorse everything that has been said about this engine working so well with tiptronic, with the paddle shifters who needs a manual?

    Hope this helps....

Hi. I have a 2.7 version and have just paid £305 at alocal Indi near Chelmsford, essex for its Varible service. Allthe filters changed. Mine doesnt tend to do large miles so its 6years old with 37k miles(Still not run in) and its the 3rd service, Having had a 1.9 previusly I havent really noticed much difference in serviceing cost. MPG averages 35 wheres as the 1.9 was 48-55mpg. When toving the caravan the mpg is still a good 23-26. the 1.9 only did 27-29. But I know have lots of power to spare.
Tyres do cost more as you have to change all 4 in one go. Cheers

I get between 33-35 mpg combined using Shell diesel. I use the paddle shift quite often as well as "S" mode on the gearbox.

So far it's been pretty regular maintenance stuff (had the water pump and 2 belts changed last year). Engine oil I use VW 507 spec and the engine takes over 8 litres of the stuff for an oil change! I've had 4 wheel alignment done twice - but that's mainly down to the poor state of the roads and 245/40/18 wheels.

Best investment for me was the Ross-tech VCDS cable, I've saved myself plenty of money by being able to check for faults and also do basic maintenance myself (e.g. oil changes/brake pads etc). It's still not cheap though!
