    Hi

I'm currently driving a MK5 GT 140 sport golf. Which if I am honest is the most boring car i have owned in a while (previous car was Audi A4 S Line Quattro 2.0T Special edition)...

I am thinking of a GTI or GTD Mk6 golf... But how much better is the MK6 compared to MK5?

The interior of the MK6 does look miles better than the MK5. I had always regarded the interior of the MK5 as being awfully cheap and nasty... so I'm glad they have sorted it out for the MK6.

I will say that the MK5 has a great chassis and drives well (for a 4 pot Diesel)... I have never driven a MK6...

    Any thoughts or comments welcome...

Well from what I've seen the mk6 is more a mk5.5, I've been told the mk6 isn't as well built as the mk5, the mk5 is a great car and I do agree the inside does look better on the mk6 they do suffer with noise from the doors along with other problems, best google mk6 problems so you get an idea of what they can be like

Everybody says the MK6 is not as well built as the Mk5 but having owned both I can't work out in what department the Mk6 is lacking in. In fact apart from the fascia and rear lights I have difficulty in telling them apart. Although have to say on the Mk 5 the rear direction indicator lenses did no fill me with confidence that a comotosed driver behind would spot them. At least they sorted that on Mk6

I had a MK5 for 77k mls and now have a MK6 which has 34k mls from new. The MK5 was a 1.4FSI which I generally enjoyed not too many problems nice dynamics a bit slow, but this is what I wanted, I didn't want to sell but the other half decided that we should have another sedate carriage. I can't say I'm sorry I changed, this model is quiet and has been absolutely faultless apart from a small noise from the door seals. This does not bother me but I understand several people give it a black mark in this area. The new car is a base 1.4 which if you want a road burner you'll avoid but at 78 I don't need the speed. The driving experience is not as much as the extra 10bhp might indicate, the higher geaaring also helps the economy. Horses for courses!

    Best,

I had a Mk5 GT TDI, an early 2004 car, after two years I started down the moding route, had it remaped by Superchips, fitted GTI brakes, Eibach springs and FSD shock absorbers, as well as 18" wheels. After six years I had only covered 36, 000 miles, but I wanted a GTI so I ordered a Mk6 GTI.

The extra 30 bhp makes all the difference and I don't get significantly worse fuel consumption. The Mk6 is an altogether nicer interior, but otherwise in not that much different, it is quieter overall and rides smoother, the Mk5 tended to crash a bit on rough roads. Styling wise the front is better, but the back from a 3/4 view is not as good, although straight on it is OK. The door mirrors are not as good and it is slightly wider, so getting into my garage is less easy.

Overall it does feel more solid and better put together and I do not regret buying it, but I would not buy the equivalent model as the Mk5, due to the particualte filter issues, with the limited miles I do.

I had MK5 GT TDI 04 plate for 3 years, i must say it was very reliable, very very economical, nippy and as expected a strong well built car.

I now have a MK6 1.4 TSi DSG 122bhp, the drive on this is amazing! I dont know how i managed to avoid myself from getting an auto, because the DSG is superb. I managed to get a Cat D with hardly any mileage on there and put a GTI front end on it...not only does it look amazing but the response and speed i get from it is out of this world! To me its alot faster than my 140bhp gt tdi.

So as for reliability, i think theres not any difference at all with the MK5 but as for performance its gone up that notch and i am very certain that the GTD and GTI models will be even better then previous models
