You'll need a new transponder chip. Or a new key if you can't remove the chip from the key.

Coil reader wiring loom is a common failure on the pre-facelifted b5 model, the loom is cheap from dealer- under 20 quid but requires steering wheel removal !

I've got the same problem and bought the replacement loom (part number 8D0 972 275) from Audi. What's the best way to go about fitting it?

    Thanks.

Clue was in the post: remove steering wheel so you can get the cowling off ! A good long reach phillips screwdriver will help you remove the screws either side of the height release lever. you would also need a 5mm alen key and make sure you don't put the ignition on whilst the airbag is off. Mark position of the steering wheel to the steering column and do not turn the airbag slip ring- tape it if necessary...
