Just bought a 2002 allroad, after my Petrol V6 Passat 4motion was only giving 17mpg. To my utter disbelief Im only getting 23 out of the Audi and thats driving it like my Gran!!! Is this normal for one of these and would it benefit from a remap or a chip? Its just had a FULL service and the auto gearbox oil and filter changed too.

Hi there. For what it is worth, here is my contribution: I have a 2002 Allroad 2.5TDI AKE Automotic from new. In the early years I was getting 30+mpg. Last few years this had dropped to around 26mpg. Spring this year I did my first service - upt till then I used Audi Service. Having heard it was a SOAB to get the car started again, I left changing the fuel filter till last - actually did it a week after the main service. Before changing the fuel filter the mpg was the same - around the 26mpg mark. IMMEDIATELY after changing the fuel filter (and finally getting the car to start!) I was and am getting an average 32mpg. So if you have not already done so, I would recommend you change the fuel filter (easy to do - only trouble is getting rid of air locks! and not a big ticket item).

I get 37 - 39 MPG. Nearly all motorway at 65mph. Smooth acceleration and making the box chage at 2krpm by lifting your foot slightly as if you were driving a manual. Helps having the EGR deleted, gives about 5 mpg more.
You seem to have really poor figures though. I would start with a scan. Is the engine temp guage straight upright? I wouldn't change any components unless you know for sure they are faulty. Does the engine feel under powered? What engine code is yours, AKE?

That sounds very low - my 2001 Allroad is giving about 35 mpg mostly on motorways with a bit of urban driving at each end. Even urban driving I'd expect more than you're getting.

Cheap tip - buy an STP diesel injector cleaner treatment or better try the diesel fuel system cleaner. It'll clean up deposits in the system and get rid of coking in the injectors that can reduce fuel efficiency by improving the spray pattern. Made a significant difference to my car.

Like the others suggest I'd also get a diagnostic done as it sounds like a fuelling or airflow problem.

There could be number of things that contribute, obviously a check by specialist would reveal most obvious.
If it's a high mileage car injection pump is at top of list.
Poor starting, hesitation, cloudy smoke perhaps?

To be honest I think TDI Allroad with 100k on the clock doing 30+ mpg without major overhaul is a keeper.

Do you know how heavy your allroad is ? As the other said, getting 30mpg out of it diesel of not is remarcable- similar size 4x4 would struggle to better 20Mpg ! The auto does not help with fuel economy either. My allroad does 30-32 average on 20" aloys and with a stuck thermostat...it's a manual model though and i only use it for towing which it does brilliantly !
