The service manual for my (November 07 build) A4 3.0 tdi says for fixed service intervals (mine's on annual) the oil should meet VW 5005 00 or VW 505 01. I'm about to use oil to 505 00 (Shell Helix HX7 10w 40w).
I'm being advised that this is wrong, and for cars with no DPF, it must be only 505 01, and that 505 00 is not suitable!!!

    Is the book wrong

Shell's own lube checker also list 505 00, as long as there is no DPF fitted. The Audi dealer who supplied the car new has confirmed that it does not have a DPF. Anyone know the correct answer? Or what the difference between 505 00 and 505 01 actually is?

The difference between oil to specs 505 & 505.01 is that the 505.01 was specially formulated for P.D. injector engines in order to combat high camshaft wear due to the high injector cam lobe loading.
If in doubt use the 505.01 spec . If it were my car this is the spec I would use for the fixed annual service plan.
505 spec is O.K. for the earlier none PD diesel engines but using 505.01 oil on these none PD engines will have no adverse effects ( it will have some extra oil shear strength in reserve) .

All cars with DPF need low ash oil which at the moment can only be satisfied with the 507 spec oil ( regardless of which service interval is used - fixed or variable serice).

I think that the VW 505 00 oil spec applies to fixed service interval CR (Common Rail) engines, which is what the 3.0 V6 is. The VW 505 01 can also be used, but is primarily designed for the PD (Pumpe Düse) engines.

I wouldn't use the variable service interval option, and think the "Long Life" tag line is a bit of "Marketing Spin" to give a lower "cost of ownership" figure over the first 3 years as the vehicle will typically be serviced only twice during those first three years, (good for leasing companies), while risking early engine failure in year 4 on (when the leasing company has sold it on....

VW 507.00 is for any engine with a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter).

Can anyone confirm or dismiss this please?

Use only 505.01 or 507 oil mate if you want the engine to last ! the cam chains have a habit of stretching from impropper oil used ! Quantum longlife 3 is only 40 quid/5L from your local VAG dealer.
