Allroad Water dripping from Exhaust Heat Shield

Am puzzled (but that doesn't take much!).

On a few occasions I have noticed water dripping from the flexible heat shield around the exhaust next to the gearbox. Just had it up on ramps and the shields are sodden so when you squeeze the shield it drips just like a towel would if it were soaked.

Had a good feel all around the box and cant see where it originates from and it isn't coolant and it hasn't rained (yet).

Any suggestions as to where to look?

It isn't causing a problem at the moment but the shield is kind of starting to disintegrate which isn't good.

Is there a puddle of water found under the battery tray? there is a drain under the battery tray and the brake servo which can get blocked (search plenum chamber), check this 1st as water can then enter the cabin and does all sorts of electrical damage under the passanger seat, I've never heard of it running out onto the gbox but it is worth checking if you haven't before.

At a completely different angle it may be the air con unit pipes condensing and dripping water, this is perfectly normal to see it dripping on the road under the car, not sure if it would be near the exhaust shield though?, if you turn the air con off it will go away, normally more noticeable on a warm day, which we don't get around here hence I mention it is worth checking the drain is ok under the battery, as this can cause a lot of costly damage elsewhere.

Just taken all the covers off around the battery and its dry as a bone in there. Got the hoover out and (much to my neighbours amazement!) hoovered out a whole load of crap that will all help to block any drain plugs.. Unfortunately I don't have the code for the stereo so will wait till I have that before taking out the battery but as far as I can see (and the footwell is dry) its not from there.

Air-con pipes make sense but the only place I can see water is on the shield - which is soaking it up from somewhere that I can't reach.

Might take off the plastic under-tray and have a look more from the front looking back.
