2001 130Tdi estate. There is a switch on the dash that says ASR. In my handbook it shows the switch as ESP.. There is a light on the instrument panel that comes on when this switch is pressed. It stays on until the engine is switched off. On restart the switch has to be activated again..Sorry to appear thick! but what does ASR mean? and what does it do.

Hi, I think they are pretty much the same thing, (I stand to be corrected) the ESP is on constantly unless you deactivate it by ''pressing'' the switch..

The light on the dash is telling you that the ESP is not on. ; )

ESP is the electronic stability program...

I am pretty sure ASR stands Anti-slip regulation, which, as Lachlan66 states, is an electronic stability programme.

ASR and ESP are different, ASR just limits wheel spin under acceleration, ESP controls the stability of the car as well using individual caliper actuation. The ESP system on the 3B Passat is good but the sensor under the back seat packs up and they cost £500.
