  1. Clunking Noise when braking at low speed

Hi, the wife drives a 02 Passat TDI 130 sport estate. A couple of months back we had new front pads put on by Nationwide Autocentre. Since then I've noticed a single 'clunk' sound (and felt the vibration through the brake pedal) from the front of the car when braking from around 10 - 20 mph. It may also be doing it at faster speeds but I may not be noticing it. I really noticed it recently at a trip to the safari park ie. slow speed and lots of stop and start.

The best way I can descibe it is that is sounds like something low down under the bonnet is sliding forward a couple of inches when braking. I've had a look from the top and can't see anything loose. Autocentre have checked the suspension and given it the all clear. They've also replaced the brake fluid. The brakes seem to be performing OK. I'm concerned however that something is working loose and may eventually fail when it's needed most. Any ideas, could this be the servo?

    Thanks.

Its fairly common for non VAG pads to not be a snug fit in the caliper and when you apply the brake the clunk is caused by slight movement of the pad.

yip i have had this also on an a4,not when brakeing but a general knock/clunk.i checked everything from ball joints to track rod ends, cv joints, running the car with the wheel off on a jack ect it took me a long time to pinpoint the loose outside brake pad.it was actually moving in the caliper and the main metal "lugs" of the pad did not sit as they should. loads of play. a slightly different problem to what you have(only on braking) but worth a look anyway.
