You should have a sticker on the first page of your service book with your engine code.i also have another sticker under the bonnet next to the air filter housing and there will be a 3rd one in the boot in the spare wheel bay.i think the engine codes on the b7 for the 2.0 diesels are;BVG,BVF,BNA,BRC,BRF,BLB,BPW,BRE,BVA and BRD.

If it was me i would first try and find out if it had any work done about the oil pump issue,if not get a garage to have look at it.I'm afraid i can't give you any mechanical advice but i've read on here theres a kit that replaces the old one to overcome this issue.surelly it's got to be cheaper to try and prevent it than it is to fix it when it goes t... up(new turbo and maybe even new engine).there ere plenty of threads here covering this issue.Good luck.

Looking at one of the threads about the blb engine i see that they were only used between sept 2004 and nov 2005.if yours has been ok untill now it might be because it had some work done.worth lookin' through old receipts(if you have any)or give audi a call.

OK thanx for info, I am going to send my local audi dealer a letter (recorded delivery) from where I purchased the vehicle, to ask the question , " is there a known problem with my type of BLB engine" and if any modifixcations have been carried out to the oil pump.

I have the 140 BLB and never had a problem at all.
I'm quite a heavy footed driver... Bought my car just over 2 years ago with 46k on the clock and now it's done 103k and never missed a beat.
Got a heavy re-map on it too and it's been fine.

Just make sure you have it serviced on time

Can anyone clarify when they started fitting Gear driven pumps? I have a 2007 A4 and I have had a few people say to me about looking into this. Thanks

Yours should be ok, being a 2007 model year.

The approx chassis change from chain to gear driven BLB engines is wauzzz8E_6A080172 (ETKA)
    wauzzz is irrelevant
    8E is model code (A4)
_ is an irrelevant number from 0 to 9

6 in this chassis number is model year 2006. Your looking for the number that immediately precedes the A (manufacturing plant - Ingoldstadt)
If yours is a 5 here (2005) and a 140tdi saloon/estate is going to be an early BLB.*
If yours is a 7 here 2007, you'll more than likely have the later gear driven BRE or BPW engine. 2.0 tdi Cabs' all have the BPW engine.
If yours is a 6 here and the last 6 digits of you chassis are less than ..080000, then your car was manufactured with the chain driven BLB engine. * No need for immediate concern as a lot have already been modified to later gear drive spec. Consult any vehicle service history.
If the numbers are more than ..085000, then you 'should' have the gear driven BLB engine or BRE engine.
Anything between ..080000 and ..085000 could have either version of the BLB . The chassis change number is only approximate. (why its a chassis number change and not an actual engine number change - i've no idea)
