My Tdi Sport 170 is approaching 5 years old, so even though its only covered 33kmiles I'm planning to get the cambelt (and water pump) changed. I asked about this at the local main dealer when they were replacing my injectors FOC , but they quoted £480 for the belt change alone. When I said this sounded a lot, and more than some VW specialists seem to be charging the lady said thy would price match any local garage which used genuine VW parts, which sounded fine until she added that they would need to see a formal written quotation. Now, I think it's a bit cheeky to ask a garage for a written quote with the deliberate intention of putting the business with someone else, so I guess I will be going to a reputable Specialist rather than the main dealer.

My question (finally) is what is a reasonable price for a cambelt and water pump change?

    TIA
    Mike

£319 or £399 if you want a new pump as well, which you are mad not to btw.

Must be a dealer whose listed in the find a dealer thing though so it's not every VW dealer offering those prices.

Mine was £280 all in for both belt & pump, using genuine parts. That was from a local garage which is the difference. Couldn't you go to a local garage & say that you need the quote in writing so that you can claim it back as expenses from your company?

    Thanks for the replies

Since my local dealer offers a price match, I think I'll try showing them the Fixed Price Servicing prices quoted by other local VW dealers and see if they will match those.

If its Peter Coopers you are looking to use, then I know from my experince of using the Portsmouth branch they will match the VW service price list, in fact on my DSG service they bettered it at £150 all in (VW price £169 inc), its just a shame they screwed up recently on something else, but the new general manager has sorted this issue out - blaming the old ways.....

Caroline in the service department at Peter Cooper's in Portsmouth, so I had it done back in June this year, they did try it on with the price so I mentioned the VW website and fixed prices and said if they didn't match it I would go to White Rose VW in Petersfield who have signed up to the VW fixed price scheme. Not only did Peter Cooper's offer to match it, then they bettered it! - but then we do have two cars with them on their three year services plans.
