    Hi all, 1st post here!

I have an early 2006 2.0TDI 140 Sport Manual; and the clutch biting point is VERY low, like on the floor, especially when cold.

First thing in the morning I can barely select 1st & Reverse as it feels like the clutch is not fully disengaged. 5 mins of driving and it's fine, biting point is still low, but not quite on the floor and all gears can be selected nice and smooth.

It seems to me that it's just adjustment needed as it bites nice and strong... but any ideas???

Not had this on a Passat but had the same sort of issue on a Freelander 2 and also a Mondeo, which turned out in both cases to be that the gearbox selector leaver rods had lost their lub and when cold Reverse, 1st and 2nd were also a no go until the heat from the engine had warmed up what little lub was left in the rod selves to allow them to move with more ease - just an idea.

Trouble selecting first and reverse with a low clutch bite point usually means the clutch and dmf will need replacing soon. This can be due to clutch friction plate, worn dmf or a worn relase bearing carrier. Only way to find out is to remove the gearbox and look.

I'd try changing the fluid in the system first - has the brake fluid ever been changed? IIRC the brake and clutch fluid share a reservoir but you have to bleed the clutch separately as it's on a different circuit. I reckon this is worth a go for the price of a bottle of brake fluid..

Let us know how you get on!

Hmmm I seem to have solved this.... by accident!!

Was sat in traffic this morning and lifted my foot under the clutch pedal, a plasticy click and the pedal came up about an inch; now the biting point is right in the centre of travel and the pedal now returns to an inch higher than it ever has before!! very strange!
