Ok guys I need some quality tyre advice. My Mk6 140PS 2.0 TDI was shod with factory fitted Continental Sport Contact 2's. I have found them extremely good and the car feels very secure on them, although I have had one or two hairy moments if accelerating too quickly on a wet road.

However, I find that I have only about 1.5 mm of tyre wear before I hit the the 'safety?' bars that run across the tread of the front tyres and I have only done 10000 miles!! Rears appear to be ok for up to about 15-20000 miles at a guess.

I have been on the internet and it appears that other people have also remarked on this point, and I am not a road racer.

Now a friend suggested that Michelin Pilot Sport 3's are good, and having looked on a TyreReview on the internet I found the following

Continental Sport Contact 2 Michelin Pilot Sport 3
    Dry Grip 83 93
    Wet Grip 73 94
    Road Feedback 74 91
    Progressiveness 69 88
    Wear 61 86
    Comfort 69 88
    Buy Again 62 89

Which leads me to ask the question, had anybody out there have their Golf fitted with
the Michelin Pilot Sport 3, and if so, would you recommend them?
If anyone else can suggest any other very good tyres that they are using, that also would be appreciated.

But, not the Dunlops, have heard complaints about the road noise they generate.

Not too worried about the cost as safety is the number one priority.

Look forward to people taking the trouble to help me make a good decision
    Thanks

Uniroyal Rainsport 2, made by Continental. I am glad you are avoiding cheap Chinese rubbish. Chinese tyres are causing my customers a lot of trouble and the wet grip is appalling.

I had these fitted when running 16" alloys: http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/Vr...Sportrac-3.htm

Excellent tyre. Highly rated in tyre tests and only £80 fitted from mytyres.co.uk as well.

I've got factory fit Hankooks - no strong views one way or the other, but after 18,000 miles the fronts have just over 4mm left and the rears between 5 & 6mm
until fairly recently the wear was pretty even between front and rear, which I thought was a bit odd
I'll probably go for Contis when it's time to change because the prices for bog standard 16" ones are not as scary as the 17 or 18 very low profile jobs

Cheers PhilDon for another piece of interesting information. The Conti's are great accept for the quick wear on the front. Possibly I may need to consider a slower climb up through the gears!
May go down the conti route again and be a bit more circumspect in driving the car, at least you feel as though the car is stuck to the road, which cannot be bad, and of course, you are
right about the price. I have a friend with a BMW Z4, tyres £300 a throw - I sweat thinking about it

I was going to start a thread about this anyway, but as you've brought it up I'll just tag onto your thread. How would we (and is it even possible) go about starting a group buy on Michelin PS3s?

I have Continental Sport Contact 2 all round on mine & the fronts have worn out after 10-12 thousand miles each time, which isn't unusual on the A6, I hear it's pretty hard on front tyres. However when I bought the car it had 3 new continentals & 1 Pirelli, the Pirelli wore out way before the Continentals.

I've always been an advocate of Michelin tyres & after reading yours & several other posts about how good Michelin PS3s are, I'd really like to get them next time. Would a Mod be able to advise me on how to get a group buy going on these?

    Any info much appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Paul.

I have Michelin PS3s on my 160ps Golf DSG. So far, 38,000km and still handles and reasonably silent. will last about 4000km more I reckon.

I think a lot may have to do with driving style - although I don't exactly plod along, I don't give the car too much stick theses days - however there is a lot of grunt (and weight) at the front so I would imagine it would be easy to get through tyres fairly quickly if you tried hard enough

in the grand scheme of things (ie compared to depreciation costs) I'd pay a bit more for tyres that you trust
