The new range of Golfs S have both a small engine and also 85hp, which seems small for this size of hatchback, VW will tell you the cars are meant to be driven hard on the rev counter, Anyone got a new Golf in this range, I had looked at the Match 1.4tsi i think it has 105/122 bhp, The small engine has put me of the Golf slightly, I currently drive a Jetta S 105 BHP great car

    Welcome to the forum.

85PS not HP and 122PS for the 1.4.

Go for the bigger TDI engine then?

The 1.4 TSI feels more like a normally aspirated 1.8/2.0l petrol (in my experience/opinion). HTH

I agree, with the 4 pots anly adding up to 1.4 litres without the turbo it would be a dog. But the turbo must spin up at such low rev's and so smoothly that you would never know it was there, if it were not for the way that with a small prod from the right foot the car picks you up and flings you down the road.

The TSI engines have been very well received. The basic 1.2 85PS TSI engine replaced the 1.4 80PS engine, and it's quicker to 60 and more efficient. The 1.2 105PS TSI replaced the 1.6 102PS engine, and is likewise more efficient and quicker.

In the Polo, the 1.2 105PS TSI engine is the most efficient petrol engine available, despite being more powerful than the others (apart from the 1.4 180PS TSI in the GTI, of course)
    2002 Polo 9n 1.2 65PS. Basic but it's better than the train!

In my opinion, an 85 horse power 1.2 would be pretty gutless in the Golf: it is a heavy car for its size.
A 105 horse power 1.2 would be more interesting, but would be thrashed to death to make meaningful progress. Might not be a good used buy with miles on the clock compared with a larger engine that won't have worked so hard.
Perfect engines for a Polo though.
Golf Match 2.0 tdi 140 Bluemotion tech, fogs, folding mirrors. Reversing camera didn't make it, so enjoying DAB.

Other motor is a Nissan Pathfinder.

I'm sorry I don't agree. The smaller engine will be stressed to such a level that it cannot last as long as a 1.4, this is basic physics. It may put out more power but with a turbo must be prone to a shorter life.

    Best,

It's not basic physics. If the 1.2 was a scaled down 1.4, then yes, it wouldn't last as long. But it's not. It's designed to be used. The 1.2 TSI will be much tougher than the regular 60 and 70PS 1.2s in the Polo. Tough enough that it can take the energy that 105PS requires. I would have no problems buying a 1.2 TSI Golf if that was the sort of car I was looking for. Unfortunately, I can't afford one, but that's another matter!
