    Hello,

Just a quick question. I recently bought a 170 quattro avant and find it heavy on the juice. I only get 31-35mpg and once had it up as high as 40mpg. Is this normal? I also find it has alot of fumes when sitting idling. Not smoke as such just the smell of fumes.
I just sold my 130 tdi golf and the wife drives a 140 tdi a3 and they would do 50-60 mpg and find there is a huge difference.

Also does anyone know what a 3.0tdi mpg is like as my mate is planning one and when i was looking for a Avant the garage told me that i would get 40mpg in the 3.0. Is this right when i only get 31-35 in a 2.0 170?

Not sure about your car but in the 3.0TDi for your friend you can get anything from 35-41mpg on a long motorway run. Around the town/short journeys I've seen everything from 18 - 31mpg.

As for the fumes, what's your exhaust like? It could be leaking somewhere and causing the smell. When wasthe last time you had your car serviced? This can make a big difference on the Mpg.

Hi there, I have the same issue, I own a A4 2.0 TDI 170 S Line SE, Avant on a 2008 B7 model, I only purchased the car a few months ago, the car had just been serviced at an Audi dealer a week before, the car has full Audi service record to date from new, its currently just turned 80 000 miles on the clock, I can only achieve 33 - 36 mpg when doing journeys of about 40 - 50 miles, this is with normal driving and not carrying any weight in the car, tyre pressures are spot on (brand new Uniroyals all round).
Also whilst idling I have noticed a strong smell of fumes, smells like diesel/oil fumes, the car has a DPF if this makes any difference?
If anyone could tell me if all this is normal or if there's anything that needs doing or checking i'd be ever so grateful, thanx in advance.

    Hello,

Thank you for the replys. My car has just turned 88000 and has a full service history. It has just had a injector under the warrenty just before i bought it so not sure if it was like this before. It was serviced 1000 miles ago and has new tyres. I take it that the fuel cosumption is normal?
The exhasut looks good but the fumes do seem to come from the front of the car but could just be swirlling round fronm the rear exhaust. I have a new born baby and when i stop and the window is open i get a stong smell of fumes so have to turn the car off before he gets gassed. Will have to get it on a ramp and check.

    Cheers Gary

The official combined figure for the 170 quattro is around 41mpg IIRC. I've had mine a few weeks and get mid to high 30s with mixed driving, low to mid 40s on a long motorway run. It's a bit of a shock to the system having come from a 2wd 130 that regularly returned over 50mpg, but it sounds about right to me. The 130 quattro only managed low 40s overall too.

Sounds about right for the 170 Quattro.
I also had a 2wd 130 before this that would do over 50mpg, and I (and my wallet) got a right shock when I got this current one.
What I do find however is that the DIS undereads usually by 2.4mpg, so if it shows I've averaged 36, then it actually works out at 38.4.

    Hope that helps

Have to agree with the above comments, fuel consumption from the 170 version around town is poor. I do find the longer the journey the mpg figure begins to creep up. Driven steady I can get mid 40s on a decent run and on one 250mile journey (with elderly parents so sticking to limits ) I momentarily saw 50mpg on the display , only once in 3yrs though.
My theory is this engine has the ability to choke the DPF all to easily during urban use spoiling economy and also forcing frequent active regeneration cycles. On the open road where regen is passive due to higher temps a clear exhaust enables the engine to run more as it should.
