It seems clear that I would connect the positive jump lead to the bolt thingy under the location which bears a red + sign which is under the midlle "mesh" cover above the plenum chamber i.e. near the bulk head and next to the brake fluid top up reservoir. All this is only visible once one removes the middle mesh cover.

Er however, where would I connect the negative jump lead to ? I cannot understand the manual. Do I have to lift off the plastic engine cover to connect the negative jump lead ?

    This is from the manual

    battery.jpg

Switch off all electrical equipment. Remove the ignition key.
    Open the bonnet
Open the red cap on the positive terminal Fig. 1.
Connect the charger cables as specified to the jump-start terminals (terminal with red cap = "positive", terminal with hexagon = "negative").
Now connect the battery charger to the mains and switch on.
After charging the battery: switch off the battery charger and disconnect the mains cable.
    Now disconnect the charger cables.
Refit the red cap onto the positive terminal.
    Close the bonnet

Any decent exposed bit of bare metal that the jump lead will happily clamp to I guess ....

That's not advised on modern cars. I don't know the reasons but I believe the amount of circuitry means it's more risky than it used to me.

Connect the negative lead to the negative bolt 'thingy'. You'll notice that, as in Scotty's picture, one of the suspension top mount bolts is longer than the others. Look more closely and it has a minus etched into it. This is your negative thingy.
