hi recently (yesterday) bought VW bora changed over from Mitsubishi galant bit of a drinker as i needed a car for commuting.

commuting 60 miles daily so needed a diesel got my self

VW Bora S TDI on 00 Mileage 90k (expect them to run upto 150k)

so people tell me what i need to do to make sure the car doesnt die on me.

will get minor servicing done the guy i bought from said Major servicing was done.

please tell me what to watch out for to make sure the car is running smooth.

also got my self a deal on 18inch rims is it wise to put 18inch alloys on this small car?

eager to get a brilliant indepth reply with everything i.e life expectency, reliability, day to day, whether 18inch wheels will make it worse on local and motorway driving?

    thanks
    people.

You'll get more than 150k, over 200K if looked after

The ride will be harsher with 18in rims, but its your choice

I agrree with rob.... as long as you change the oil when required, and replace the air, fuel, oil filters, it should run for long after 150K miles.

I myself drive a 1.9tdi bora (pd 100) and have recently put 18" RS8 alloy wheels on it... There is no rubbing at all as the wheels have the same OD as steel rims and larger tyres.

It has dramatically improved the road handling especially at higher motorway speeds.

The way you refer to the Bora as a "small car" makes me think it was a reluctant purchase.... I agree the galant is a nice car (and slightly larger) but i think with an engine remap, (not sure which engine you have) you'll soon be smiling from ear to ear.

    very mixed opinions on wheels?

well i bought this car your right reluctantly i love my galant had fully scooped up but just got proper job and that requires travelling so hence sold it but the bora revamp started front grille putting on kamei sport mesh, also boeser blick mean hood extension and 18'inch wheels.

my main commuting will be motorway travelling.

the only concern i have is will it hit the body or something when going over the humps?

also bought a racing cold air intake (this also need few suggestions)

apart from that i'm pretty pleased with the car so far BUT in terms of reliability im bit sceptical for german cars as i always owned japs and they never ever let me down (10yrs).

hope to see some good reply too.

can some more ppl give me some shed on 18inch wheels, also i'm looking for in-car entertainment system any cheap knocking about?

i want to put my pixs of car online where can i put on this forum?

I would check that racing air intake before putting it on.

Some aftermarket air filters (K&N for eg) have a light coating of an oily substance (invisible to the eye) and some of this gets through to the MAF sensor and gunks it up. (thus making the car idle eratically, and generally not run as well.)

So sometimes you think your improving performance, and your actually making it worse.

The 18" wheels are not a problem. As i said before the overall diameter of the 18 alloys and 15" steel wheels are the same. (if you put them on top of each other theres no difference around the outside...) I get no rubbing what-so-ever. (full lock / bumps / heavy load / towing a heavy caravan)

I'm running Toyo Proxes T1-S performance tyres (225-40 R18) and the ride and handling is far better than it was with the standard steel wheels on.

In terms of reliabillity.... german engineering is pretty good, and my car has that "solid" feel to it. Never broken down (*touches wood*), but i've only had it about a year.

My car only had a tape player in the car when i bought it, so replaced it straight away. Now i've got a single din, flip out dvd player (7" flat screen), from halfords.... half price, £300 instead of £600, and 6 months interest free.

Do you know what BHP your car is? There are some serious gains in BHP and Torque available from a remap (typically £250 - £500 depending on where you go / which model you have.)

    Reagrds

nick looks like it you know what you talking about well then that will put my mind to ease to put RS4 wheels.

secondly does mean bonnet extension causes any problems to performance?

as for Torque and BHP i have to read up the manual as it doesnt show up i think its TDI 110 version or something!

    thanks for indepth reply.

also what interval i should have minor service (air, oil, fuel filters and oil change) and major (cambelt etc) changed currently it has 90k on it the pervious guy who i bought it from told me got cambelt and major service done 84k.

so i need to know the service interval thanks

the air filter i bought is located at this url:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/99-04...8384QQtcZphoto

i dont know how good it is and its worth putting it on etc.please some feedback.

    thanks

Your engine code will dictate what BHP you have.... You will find a sticker in the boot under the carpet with a code something like ADZ or similar

This depends on what servicing regime you are on. There are 2 different tyes...Longlife and interval.

Longlife - constantly analyzes the oil's condition, (as well as many other contributing factors) and the car will tell you when it wants a service. (mines longlife)

Interval - widely disputed but normally 10/12K miles or every 12 months whichever comes first. Again the car will tell you.
