MMI restart problem

Hi guys,
Got home last night and MMI working fine (after an 800 mile trip). Went out this afternoon and by the time I got to the bottom of the (short) drive the MMI had restarted. Didn't think much of it until it did it again after a few seconds and then kept doing it constantly with differing intervals.
Turning the ignition off then back on had no effect.
Being stumped and inquisitive I had a look in the boot and on the right hand side where the jack and some fuses are a little module (that seems to have been stuck on with mastic) was dangling down with a grey wire going to it. There was a red and a black wire that were obviously broken off where it had been hanging down and being thrown about.
Only the grey wire remains connected
Question is, what is this device and I am assuming that it is something to do with the MMI and causing the issues?
Any help welcome as it is not actually my car (yet)!

Hi,
Cleared them at about 17:00 today and there are more this time (22:00 ish). Didn't look at the optical bus though then but tested it at 22:00, cleared and tested again and it was the same. Haven't driven it since this afternoon though.
I will post a bigger picture tomorrow as it is chucking it down with rain at the moment.
The module that fell off has/had three wires going into it (red, black and grey) and a connector block coming out of it with a loom which is taped to the box itself so only apears to have power with the grey wire being the output - for what I don't know. Looks a bit of an installation mess to me and not sure if that is the cause of the fault or it has been like it for a while. Can't believe Audi would just mastic something on!
Got to give it back to my mate tomorrow and haven't told him it is broken yet Looks like an MMI issue with something but don't know what and not obvious to me from the codes.
Always been looked after by the same dealer since new, and only one owner so not messed with - he is not that type of owner. Maybe I am just unlucky to have whatever it was break when I was evaluating it for purchase

Hi
Has MMI high fitted as standard. Bose sound too. One multichanger and mmi cable in glove box (which had my ipod connected, plus amp satnav in boot.
I have tried the reset with buttons and through vagcom (just enough time before it restarts) but no improvement.

Looks like it might be a tracker then. Don't think he knew he had one.
Is it worth disconnecting the battery for a while or will it need some codes on start up? Don't want to break it more than it is already

it already broke and you need to bridge the optical circuit at either the amp or ami to allow the most circuit to complete and eliminate the failed control unit

you need a most repeater to do this and this simply takes the place on the most loop of the suspected failed control unit to re establish the optical ring

Maybe the long drive was too much for it - or my taste in music made it loose the will to live.

Managed to complete an optical test without everything booting and I only got media player 2 erroring on both electrical and optical. What is media player2?
Went out for a drive to the shops and the red dash airbag light came on as well. I am sure this is all down to the can controller or media fault.
Cleared all the faults so see what happens between now and dealers.
