Hi everyone. I may have a problem with my engine control module, so I need to remove it. Unfortunately, I can't locate it. The information that I have, informs me that it is in the plenum chamber?? The location diagram points to a position between the windscreen and the plastic cover that hides the window screen wiper control equipment. Is it under this plastic cover? I've had a quick look but I can't see much. My car is a Golf MkV 2006 2.0 TDI 140. Thanks for your help in advance.

To get at the engine ECU, you need to remove the wiper arms and the scuttle trim. Next you need to remove the bulkhead extension. There is a 10mm nut on the o/s and a 10mm bolt on the n/s, then it lifts upwards. You'll now be able to see the ECU under the windsceen near the n/s. It's secured with shear bolts, so you'll need to remove them with a hammer and sharp punch. Just don't hit the windscreen!

What is the problem? I have not had one of those ECU’s fail yet. I have had to get at them to test wiring from the plug and I deal with the security bolts by cutting a slot in the head with a disc cutter AFTER covering the windscreen to protect it from sparks.

It's very difficult to remove the wiper arms when the nuts are removed 'cause they are on spines.

The trim is split in the centre & can be turned vertical to allow access.

I cut off the bolts rather than using a hammer. Remove threads and replace with bolts.

Plugs to ECU are locked on so have to slide locks to remove.

Check no pins are bent. As said before not normally ECU fault.

Also clean scuttle of leaves etc.

Thanks for all the replies. The car is a Mk V Golf 2.0 tdi sport 2006, 60k miles
The throttle body is blowing fuse F24 which is a 10A, this was making a noise prior to the fuse blowing. Also the engine light was illuminated on the dashboard. I removed the throttle body and sent it away for repair. On it's return, I refitted and replaced the fuse. The fuse blew again.
I phoned the repairer. He indicated that it could be a problem with the ecu. In his words, 'You have been unlucky, normally you refit the throttle body and fuse and it works again. This one has affected the ecu. Take them both out and send them to me for repair and testing.'
The ecu appears to be tricky to remove and the car will be off the road for the best part of a week.
Can you advise me any further?

The throttle body is still faulty, to prove this unplug it and the fuse will no longer blow. These TB repairs are not effective, ask for your money back and obtain a new Pierburg TB from someone like GSF.
