Can someone have a look at there owners manual regarding braked towing capacity of a 1.9 tdi avant vs a 1.9 tdi quattro avant. Parkers show the quatrro has a 200kg higher towing capacity, but another site shows them the same.
    Thanks in advance.

Hello farmer, the 96kw4xdrive kerb weight is 1615,so towing should be 85% of that, it should say on a data plate on the car for a avant, the book doesn't say wether its a saloon or estate, anyway you can increase the 85% if you are a experienced towing driver, being 4wd doesn't alter anything, its the weight.

Thanks for the information. It is the GVW I am really looking which the max trailer weight can be worked out from. The 80-85% rule is only a recommendation.

    http://www.dft.gov.uk/vosa/repositor...20trailers.pdf

The reason why I am asking is my father was recently stopped in his 4x4 and the police checked the VIn plate and the plates on the trailer for max towing weight. They seem to be doing this a lot lately and I wanted to keep myself right. I'm looking for a car with a high legal towing capacity and good mph.

    http://www.parkers.co.uk/advice/Towi...=True&model=58

It states 1600kg for a 19tdi and 1900kg for a 1.9tdi quattro. Is there really this much of a difference in max capacity? I would estimate the quattro being 200kg heavier so I suppose could be true.

The gvw is 2000kg(5 speed man)but thats just the vehicle and everything you can fit in.If you go on a caravan website they usually have a section like "what can my car tow", or safe towing limits,I think basically the trailer must not exceed the vehicle.

Does it give the gross vehicle train weight? It will be the highest value. This minus the GVW will be the max towing weight.

I hear what you say about caravan site recommendations, but a landrover discovery weighs 2150kg and can legally tow 3500kg. This is almost 150% of the vehicle weight.
Hence my original question regarding can a quattro. I was wondering if it was a 4 wheel drive thing as a 4wd is alot steadier when pulling a load

All I can see is under max trailer weights is 3645(car and trailer) up to 12% gradient, again doesn't say if its for a saloon or avant(4wd 5 speed box).

Just my 2 cents, but I thought it was down to what the manufacturer specified not the weight of the car? I would imagine it has to do more with chassis design primarily then the drive train. Then after that, the weight allowed at the tow point so as not to disturb the suspension/steering setup. If the car is designed to tow X amount by the manufacturer irrespective of the drive train or vehicle weight you don't know whats going to happpen. And your insurance in invalid too.

    @ NEVO
So the VIn plate on your car reads
    2090kg
    3645kg
    1-1095
    2-1135

Meaning the max permitted towing weight is 1555kg?

    See below for explanation
