    Hi Guys,

my Golf Mk5, 1.6 Fsi failed the MOT today and i ve been told that it needs a new Catalytic Converter, which would cost abt 650£ (ouch). This sounds a bit excessive to me and i am wondering:

    1) If getting an aftermarket one is worth it and
    2) How much would that roughly cost?

I will be grateful if anyone can share their experience or suggest a good place to find an affordable one

    Thanks
    WH

I'd assume that Euro Car Parts, GSF or one of the other German parts specialists will be able to help.

You may find if your car is quite new then VW is the only real option but hopefully not.

This company advertises on VWAudiforum: http://www.catalyticuk.co.uk/

    Good luck.

I was routing around a local scrapyard a couple of weeks ago and there are a large number of golfs there. The yard is located at Pease Pottage, West Sussex, alongside the A23. Telephone number is 01293 523684.

I think you need a second opinion on this as I have never heard of a catalytic converter failing at this young age unless it has been abused with unburned fuel ect. and if it is, it will have a good scrap value.

I have had a few 1.6FSI Golf 5’s with failure of the cat in the centre pipe, it does seem to be an issue with this particular version. I would strongly recommend a genuine cat was fitted and the £650 price is about right BUT it must be established why the cat has failed before fitting a new one and a code read would be the place to start. I am concerned that you have not mentioned any warning lights being on.

Actually the EPC light was on, so i took it to an independant who after some diagnostic claimed that its a Lambda sensor that need replacing. Well that got done and the light went off, a month later its back on now. So i took it back to the same garage who after another diagnostic are now saying that they think the other exhaust senor (which would cost abt 450 to replace) and even after that they cant gurantee that the light wont come back again, in which case they would need to replace the catalytic conveter.

Also to my surprise they are saying that unlike most Golfs my mk5 has 2 catalytic converters and both may need replacing (costing around 1000). This is now ringing alaram bells in my head and i have a feeling that i may landed at the wrong place.

I am now thinking of taking it to the VW main dealer for a new diagnostic and will see what they say. Just in case it come to the CAT replacement can someone plz suggest some good and affordable independant dealer in Berks/Bucks or Midlands area.

    Thanks
