I just bought a small Trailer (Erde 102). It apparently has a 7 pin plug to connect the electrics.

I have a factory fit towbar (detachable) on my MK6 Golf. What exactly do I need to connect the two?

I am confused by 12, 13 pin and 7 pin adapters

Any help appreciated. I expect as I am in a hurry I will have to got to one of the local suppliers (Halfords etc) tomorrow to pick one up.

Also need to source a number plate on a Sunday! - Kwik Fit are supposed to do them, but grateful if anyone can suggest another chain that might do them.

Well the standard 7 pin socket and plug should be wired in the correct sequence. If you have the factory towbar fitted then just plug it in and check that all the light operate correctly. The adapter should have been fitted and coded.

Thanks for the quick reply. Are you saying that the standard 7 pin plug on the trailer will plug into the 12 or 13 pin socket on the detachable towbar?

If that is os then I'm a happy camper but I expect the socket will not marry up with the 7 pin plug.

Is it a 13 pin socket on the car?

Well they used to have a 7 pin socket 12N for normal lighting and another 7 pin socket 12S for different features in a caravan (with a white cover) it appears they have combined these two sockets into one.

If your trailer has a 7 pin plug then your going to have to buy a 13 pin plug and wire it as per the link above.

I will take a look tomorrow as I need to remove the bumper panel and fit my towbar. I am pretty sure it's a 13 pin, but it's quite a while since I looked at it and have not used the socket yet.

    Thanks for the diagram.

A UK 7 pin plug will not fit in to the new euro 13 pin. You need a spider converter.
