.....Or what looks like corrosion (white marks). One wheel especially, is worse than the other three and so I thought that I would call in at the dealer today and buy a replacement centre cap, or two, (with VW emblem). The parts guy told me that they were £7 each (phew) and so I asked him if they were easy to prise out but he implied that the best way was to take the wheel off and push them out or drill through them and pull them out with, say, a screw.
He then asked how old the car was and when I told him about 20 months he suggested that I have all four replaced under warranty.
Next Wednesday my car is booked in for a half hour's work to have all four done. A good result I think.

Whilst in the showroom I noticed a Golf with a Chrome finisher on the lower lip of the hatchback lid and thought it looked quite smart and therefore enquired as to its price but when told that it was £70 (ludicrous), I said forget it!

VW have been replacing those centre caps for at least 10 years now to my knowledge.

You'd have though they'd have got 'em sorted by now!

I suppose that's why they were so nonchalant and matter of fact about the whole matter.

It's the Atlanta alloys you have, right? Mine are the same. The actual wheel is corroding around the center cap as well. Not that I'm that bothered, I've swapped the wheels anyway.

Wheel corrosion does seem to be a big problem for VW.

I haven't looked that closely. You know, old bloke, old back and I spend as little time as possible kneeling down and peering too closely.
However, I wish it were easier to remove caps but if that was so, and I bought my own then I suppose I'd have to forfeit the warrantly paying for the replacements.
I would have been quite happy just buying one or two but the bloke insisted on examining the wheels and then directing me to the appropriated person dealing with bookings and warranty work.

As a matter of interest, do you have any form of protection on your alloys? I use GTechniq C5.

    Who, me, no.
Maintaining sparkling looking alloys by washing and bulling up the tyres is about as far as I am prepared to go!

The substance you refer to above is a ludicrous price even from Amazon and all you get is 15mls unless that is a printing error.

Noticed mine are corroding when I was washing the car at the weekend.

I never use any chemicals to clean the wheels, just water. I will expect the caps to be replaced under warranty.

    .

I just wash them and Autoglym polish them occasionally. If they are still covered under warranty why worry?

It's interesting how you dismiss a product which you clearly know nothing about purely based upon price - I wish I was such an expert.
