There is a danger something could get sucked into the pipe and damage the turbo or engine if you try to drive it.

It waill also have a lack of power and be really smokey which wont do the cat any good

very common problem, the metal tags break which allows the hose to be pushed out of the cooler, new hose is £26 and £2 fot 2 new clips, its after the the turbo so dont worry about sucking anything in to the turbo, replace the pipe job done

The lower hose on my 1.9TDI repeatedly pops off after I replaced a holed intercooler on the car this week. When you refer to the metal tags are you talking about the ends of the clips or the ends of the hoses?. The hoses and clips on mine were apparently fine - I've just changed the intercooler for a secondhand one - could that be the problem?.
