you MUST purchase the license for it from ross-tech, anything else is illegal.

No, you're correct with what you said, anything that is not Version 409 or 311 is not shareware.

Version 6 is geared towards one of the newer smart leads that does not require a code activation.

I don't think downloading it would be illegal but unless you have the appropriate lead you won't be able to do anything with it.

There is currently a vag-com version 3.112 doing the rounds on the illegal sites, it is a disgrace that full versions are available for free.

You should really buy a legit copy.

You can go to Rosstechs own site and download vagcom for free.

It is the interface cable that makes all the difference.

Older dumb leads need an activation code from Rosstech, newer smart leads are plug and play once you've downloaded the free software.

I've never had any involvement with non genuine leads but would assume that you'd only get limited shareware functionality from them, that is if they work at all.

But...

As I've said before, getting properly set up with vagcom and paying for it is a small price to pay. You will in most instances only have to use it once to recover the outlay. There is no excuse for ripping off Rosstech, we should all be thankful that such a company exists and has provided this wonderful tool that enables us to keep our cars on the road. In my mind, having vagcom if you've any vag group car is as essential as having a socket set.
