Trolley jack

Having never used one before on my Passat, where do I put it?

on the same place as you would the jack in the boot, but if poss on the front subframe, tbh the sill where the standard jack goes will be fine mate

I thought that would bend seam which runs along the sill?

Off topic but still related, on my old '97 Mondeo, I used a trolley jack to change a wheel and as it was very dark I placed the trolley jack too far under the car. It was mostly rust but it went straight through the floor when I raised it up!

Chuckle. Sold the car 5 days later for £400.

And yes, I did tell the buyer!

that is one of the most strongest parts of the body, it is designed to use the standard jack, a trolley jack is no different

but what i mean is, the jack in the boot has a notch in it, which fits into a ridge at the designated jacking point.

The trolley jack is just flat, and that ridge on the car would bend wouldn't it?

no it will be fine mate, if your planning to leave it jacked up for any leangh of time use axel stands but if its just to change a wheel then it wont harm the jacking point on the sill at all

my ramp at work is a 2 post ramp and on most cars the flat pads seat on the sills, and doesnt cause any damage

If I'm using a trolley jack I go in from the front (rear for rears) and put it under the suspension arm just inboard of the wheel that way you don't need to lift as high as the suspension doesn't unload as you lift the car weight off. Saying that the standard jacking points are more than strong enough.
