hi guys am new ( been a member for a while viewing purpsoes ) but i just sold the wife a4 b5 2.6 quattro .. great car but dear on the juice , just picked up a 1997 A3 1.8 20v ( non turbo )tonight and has a few small issue's ,
one being the slight crunch into 3rd which ive read loads about and know its gonna need a recon box in the future ( due to the syncro mesh )but until i can afford the box i wanted to fully service the car and change the gearbox oil as a temp measure probably wont make a differance but at least i tried .. ( clutch as just been done and the pedal is really light to operate ) ,

is there a how to guide on changing the oil in the box , ive been serching for ages both on here and the net but found nothing , apart from refferance to
" am going to do it at the weekend let me know how it goes "
but there is never no reply ..

any help would be great , ive read some saying its a simple bung at top and bottom etc , and other saying its too hard to do etc ...

i think 75w -90 is recommended and requires just around 2 litres ???

any help would be mega appreciated ..

    chris

You could do with telling us the gearbox code, but assuming it's a CZM manual, then the filler plug is as in this diagram:

I can't find any instructions on draining the fluid, but hopefully he drain plug should be easy enough to find when you look under your gearbox (the one with the VW logo on it looks favorite in that picture to me, but I don' know)

To refill, fill up to the bottom lip of the filler hole (arrowed), screw in plug, run engine for about 2 minutes, then top up oil to the bottom lip again. Plug torque is 30Nm.

If you post the gearbox code, I'll check that the instructions are the same.

on the sticker in the front of the service book and the sticker in the spare wheel well. Tehre's a 3 digit engine code (AGN or similar) and then a 3 digit gearbox code.
Then there's loads of smaller 3 digit codes which are tell you what factory fitted options the car had (this can be decoded online for free at igorweb)

wee update since it bugs me when people dont post there findings ,

as suggested the diagram is correct one for my car and the two areas that are mentions are infact the drain and fill holes .. ,

the fill hole requires a 13mm allen key or equvalent oil plug key , and is not a hex head bolt like ive found on some cars ..

I'm about to do the same, although I need to know which hole is the right one too. I've located two hex bolts, one underneath, the other at the side under the front-left wheel arch. I loosened it but oil came out - is this normal for the fill hole?
