Just had a discussion with next door neighbour. In passing he mentioned that his brother in law, a mechanic, had said he would only use Shell/BP/Esso etc in his car. The supermarket product was inferior. My neighbour also reckoned that, since he had stopped using Tesco petrol in his motor bike and started using Esso, he had noticed both performance and mpg were better.

There is also the question of whether premium fuels, like Shell Optimax or V power are worth it.

Go on Google and there are many opinions on this - some swearing they get better mpg.

Anybody any ideas on this? I drive a 1.9TDI Golf 2005 plate.

    Not this subject again......

They are all the same. The only difference is the additives that go in.

Sorry if it's been done to death before - thought it might have come up but nothing exactly like it came up when I did the search.

On additives though, surely that would make a difference? Shell claim their V Power cleans out injectors and removes deposits. Empty claims or some basis in fact?

The tanker fills up at the refinery, it then goes to the company selling it, they then add their magic spunk to it, tanker then goes to the forecourt.

It's not Shell telling lies, they do add to it, but in doing so you don't get 100% of a gallon when you buy it, see it like a Lager Top vs Lager.

I tend not to give it much thought.

I use BP because they're nicely on my route to work.

Though I did note that Premium Unleaded is now £1.36 a litre...

I guess the real issue is whether the additives in stuff like V Power are any good.

I've always thought diesel is diesel and Tesco's finest or Sainsbury's taste the difference come from the same place as branded fuels

    Not everybody agrees though.

Diesel is the same where ever you buy it, BP or Tesco it's all made by a few refineries that supply everyone. The same goes for regular unleaded.

Premium fuel is made specifically for the brand and though is similar in performance, the actual recipe is specific to the brand.

Hope that helps. Every little does in my trade.
