Just the way they seem to be when the weather gets colder, unless it's a new car in which case the problem usually doesn't exist.
This link has mentioned this before https://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/s...highlight=boot and if you do a search you'll find several more people have had this.

Simple enough job to replace the gas struts. Depends how hard you want it to open. My brothers golf has ones strong enough to open his hatch back with just the release botton on the key or inside the car. They wear out after a while though. At the min, mi es strong enough to open the boot even with 3 inches of snow on it!

Replace gas struts - £27 each from the dealer. Simple to do - pop off and pop on. They do wear off over time, so if the car is more than 3-4 years old, may be time to change them.

i changed mine earlier this year and even in the below freezing temps the boot will still kick open

Hey guys, please see my link below where I checked a few places as well as the dealer for prices on struts...the resuults are all in here.
I've also included pics of the struts and did a small write up or "how to" for removing and replacing them.

I hope that this helps anyone that has any issues orthoughts about doing this job.

    Cheers guys

It's the cold doing it, unless your bootlid falls back down there's nothing wrong with the srtuts, they contain fluid, so in these conditions the fluid will thicken.
