Car wont accelerate past about 40mph and other issues

ok, I have an A4 B7 Tdi (140) Multi-tronic (2006 model) that is in the garage at the moment, I wonder if you can give me any ideas as to what the problem could be.

It happened when my wife was on the motorway driving to work so the words below are her words of what happened.

Any help would be much appreciatted.


"I was driving along the M11 in the right hand lane, when my Audi A4 2.0 just went into slow mode. I was driving at 70/80mph when the car just stuck at this speed. . I just about stopped the vehicle because the brakes did not work, eventually the brakes kicked in and I managed to roll the car into the hard shoulder and put it in to park, this is when the car totally stopped (thank god).

I then started the car again and the rev counter was reaching into 2/3/4000 revs but I was only reaching a speed of 40mph, and it did not go any faster then this, everything else was ok this time. It was as if the accelerator was not sending the message to the wheels.

When the car was recovered, the engine managment light came on whilst the car was being reversed into the garage"

most likely gone into safe mode. seen it happen before turned out it was a blocked cat converter sending a wrong signal back through the lamda, maybe something to look into
