a6 2005 electronic handbrake wont un-lock. The problem happens intermittantly. This has been ongoing for a long period of time. Has this been happening to others ans has this been flagged as a dealer problem. Thanks

It is known problem on all electronic handbrake cars, i been told by my mechanic. Not many A6's suffers from it, he seen few A6 having issue with electric handbrake, mostly VW passats suffers from this problem.
Its stupid question, but do you have your seat belt on, or do you keep your foot on brake when you trying realise parking brake.
It did on my car over day, i been told seat belt should be on before realising parking brake.

This is absolutely right - the handbrake refused to release on my brand new A6 soon after I bought it. I mentioned it to a friend of mine with a similar A6 and he pointed out the safety interlocks. They're described in the owner's manual. In my case, I'd just jumped out of the car to open a gate and hopped back in to drive forwards but didn't re-fit my seatbelt. I hadn't pressed the release button - I just tried to move away as normal.

The handbrake should always release if you put your foot on the brake while pressing the button, whether you've got your seatbelt on or not.

I have the same problem on a 2005 A6 2.0 TDi. Its sometimes wont release when Im pulling away on an incline. I assume there is some sensor that tells the car your on a slope and dont have to press the foot brake to release?

Its a right pain when it sticks as I haev a hill next to mine with traffic lights, I dread them turning red. Its happened a few times and the motorist behind me aren't too forgiving when Im getting flustered!

If you switch the handbrake on but leave the car in D (assuming it is an auto) then the handbrake should automatically release when you push the accelerator - well it does on mine. Never come across the seatbelt thing though....

I find it's sensitive to whether you have fully depressed the clutch pedal before trying to move off. If you don't dip the pedal right the way to the floor, the brake often doesn't auto-release.

Also when having to select gear and move off quickly although this may be the equivalent to not dipping the clutch fully...

Hi offally i had this problem on my passat it would not release it did eventually but had a warning on the dash anyway i drove it home opened the windows to listen to the motors and when they worked the nearside motor ran for two or three times the amount the offside one did which made me suspect there was a problem with it i then removed it and found it had ceased i wasnt sure what to lubricate it with as it has a belt in it so anyway in the end i filled it with brake fluid and left it to soak after a couple of hours i tipped the break fluid out connected it to a battery charger and it worked perfectly there was a small amount of rust in it when i removed it but it didnt look that bad but obviously it was bad enough to stop it i think moisture got in the seal because the aluminium had corroded and formed a white powder around it i cleaned this up and put some boss whit pipe sealent on the joint and so far every thing is working as it should I also fitted new brake pads at the same time without connecting it to a laptop by undoing the two torx bolts on the motors and winding the pads back once the motors are off which isnt hard to do once i had disconnected the battery hope this helps allthe best Andy
