HI EVERYONE !!! I HAVE A MARK 5 GOLF GT TDI. ITS A 2 LITRE ON A 04 PLATE WITH 59K MILES.IVE HAD IT FROM NEW AND ITS ALWAYS BEEN SEVICED BY A MAIN VW DEALER. ON FRIDAY I HAD JUST DONE A 40 MILE MOTORWAY RUN AND PARKED THE CAR UP TO GO TO A SHOP. ALL WAS FINE. WHEN I CAME OUT I RESTARTED THE ENGINE, DIDNT QUITE TURN IT OVER FOR LONG ENOUGH AND IT DIDNT START. I RESTARTED THE ENGINE BUT THE YELLOW WARNING LIGHT BECAME LIT. ALSO IN THE CENTRAL DISPLAY PANEL THE TEXT "EMISSIONS WORKSHOP" APPEARED. I WENT ROUND TO A LOCAL GARAGE AND THEY PLUGED IN A DIAGNOSTIC UNIT UNDER THE DASH. HE SAID TWO FAULTS WERE LOGGED BUT HE JUST CLEARED THEM AND SAID IT WOULD BE OK. THE LIGHT ON THE DASH HAD GONE AS WELL AS THE TEXT . THE NEXT DAY I DROVE ABOUT 8 MILES TO GET SOME FUEL . UPON RESTARTING THE LIGHT CAME BACK ON AS WELL AS THE WARNING TEXT. THE CAR RUNS PERFECTLY FINE . I THEN HAD TO DRIVE IT TO BLACKPOOL FOR A FAMILY DAY/NIGHT AWAY AND BACK ON VARIOUS ROADS,IE MOTORWAY AND "A" ROADS . COVERED 350 MILES .I CANNOT TELL ANY DIFFERENCE IN PERFORMACE OR MPG AND LIKE I SAID IT RUNS FINE . ANY IDEAS ?????????

PS. IVE JUST NOTICED THAT UPON SWITCHING OFF THE ENGINE IT SHUDDERS TO A STOP. DOES THIS POINT TO THE INTAKE MANIFOLD FLAP VALVE BEING FAULTY. IF SO WHERES THE BEST PLACE TO GET A REPLACEMENT? MANTY THANKS GATSBY

Yes it is indicative of the flap going ,contact the garage that did the scan and ask them for the codes, then report back.

Thanks nevo, i just happened to be near the garage that plugged in the diagnostic reader . I will try and go back tomorrow to see if they will plug it back in. Vw said the part will be £300, euro car parts said £211.44 . Theres is a pierburg brand part number 422440260 . Are they of equal quality to vw's ? Or would i be better of buying the genuine article? Cheers gatsby

Its ok to leave it for a while,it shuts the air off into the engine on shutdown, the only risk is if you get a runaway engine you've nothing to stop it! but that is very remote in the short term.you could try cleaning it,but if you've got to pay someone to do the work its not worth the bother,if your a DIYer its worth a try.

It is ok however the fuse can blow that protects the circuit. This fuse also provides power to a fan within the engine bay (can't remember exactly where!) which won't then be operating, just be aware!
