    Where on earth are they?

Looked absolutely everywhere. According to the vento golf manual they are on the transmission bell housing, covered by a great big castellated nut, I can't see it any where.

Also, in the same manual above, it talks of jacking the car up and putting on axles turning the steering wheel and so on to get the v belts off. Can't I just undo the alternator and slide it and pull it off that way, or am I being naive.

I'm assuming that the other descriptions and where the timing mark is is due to the aaz being in a vento/ golf.

I'll take some pics of the engine, that might help.

Well thank you very much. That saves a lot of huffing and puffing.

Well I looked all over and found two holes, not covered with a bolt. Hung upside down with my head and hand jammed somewhere in the engine and with the use of a mirror and torch and I could just about see inside. One didn't appear to have anything, the other looked like there may have been teeth in there, but it was hideously difficult to see.

The one with the teeth is A below, is that the right hole for the timing marks?

If it is, how on earth is anybody going to line the timing marks up?

Then i got to thinking. the timing belt was completely snapped in half and the engine was turned over trying to get it going, not much but enough I'd imagine to send everything out. Also I can't move all the pulleys and sprockets together because there is no belt on. It does say in this manual, that if you use the locking bar on the camshaft and injection pump sprocket lock the engine is at tdc, The camshaft lock 'centres the camshaft and sets the valve timing in reference conditions.

Basically if I lock it into position as the manual suggest do I need to line up the timing mark? since I'd imagine everything will be out anyway. Or is the camshaft/ injection pump a way to getting your timings back after haing taken the engine to bits?

I hope I'm making myself clear.

    Thanks.

These are both circular and there the only two holes i can see, unless it's covered by something.

Seems like the simplest things are going to undo me!
