Has anyone done or know of anyone who has done an ecu swap to boost performance on a passat tdi engine.

Basically what i want to know is can i fit an ecu of a pd 130 or 150 golf gttdi to my 105 hp passat estate 2004 model or do i have to shell out and buy a remap/chip?
is it purely just ecu settings that effects the power on these engines or is it turbo injector intercooler differences?

if i can swap the ecu anyone know what part number to look for on an estate or from what engine code seems to be a lot of AWX about these appear to be 130hp and can be found on flea pit for £45+

also what will need to be done in the way of recoding to get it to work
i have vcds and vag tacho

    any help is much appreciated

Interesting approach, but i think the main difference is
    in the injectors.

Whatever you do, come back and tell us.

I cant see how it will work. The 130/150 ECU's will be programmed to suit each particular engine.

The injectors/turbo are different (amongst other parts) I believe so it'll run like crap. You'll have much less problems if you get a proper remap to suit your own engine. If this approach worked then everyone would be at it - They aren't!

well from what i can find info wise the turbo on my AVB engine is a Garett GT1749v which is used on most of the 1.9 vw audi range its als used on many fiats fords and many others, the seat cupra gives 160 BHP with a GT1749v
The injectors on the AVB have a nominal pressure of 288 bar and the AWX has 292 BAR 4 bar is not that bigger difference on this scale and besides the 110 Kw ARL engine of the golf GTTDI also use injectors with 288 BAR nominal pressures .
there are a few things on other forums about changing the MAP sensor for a £ bar sensor which will change the behaviour of the VV turbo anyone any thought on this
well if it was as easy as just swapping the ecu and a few sensors we definately would all be doing it straight out the showroom and not paying for a remap ! when volkswagen have spent millions on there mapping it would be good to have that kind of backing behind the power increase.
with the old tdi mk3's there were not really that much to do a friend of mine swapped the injectors and the pump off a rover on to an AAZ and ended up with about 160 Bhp smokked like a chimmney when booted but it sure did go!!!

If you have access to cheap bits I would give it a go. In the early days of remapping it wasn't unusual to find a so called remapped car had just had the map from a different model installed. I saw this with a number of so called performance mods, but they were not VW and they were all petrol engines. Given that a fair number of chip tuners and remappers have no idea what they are doing, you won't be much worse off.

Changing an ECU with one taken from a different model is unlikely to get you very far. Sure, there are some engines which are mechanically identical with a higher power engine in the range where this might work, but it isn't something to be experimented with unless you have certain facts. The ECU controls so many aspects and items of the engine including fuelling, turbo, injectors, valve timing etc that it isn't worth the risk of causing damage to a perfectly good engine.

While I understand some of the cynicism about remaps because of the operators that use untested standard maps, I can assure you that a good remap that uses your current map as the starting point is going to give you the results you want. In the case of your engine it will add around 30bhp and about 25% more torque.

If you'd like to talk this through give me a call.

    Cheers

    Paul

Just buy a Tunit Chip from Bromleys in Lancs. We have two Tunits on Diesel Passats. One on a 1998 110 TDi Sport that we took off our 1994 Passat 90bhp 1Z Estate. That did approx 60 k with the chip and is still on its original clutch etc and uses no oil at 240K. It's covered another 60 k on the 1998 Sport Estate. The chip on these two models can be fitted easily in less than 10mins. No I'm not joking!. Tunits are completely bombproof and have pulled caravan, boat and trailer. Oil/filter always changed at 5k.

My 2002 Sport Estate 130 PD has a Tunit Chip I bought for £150 off Ebay that was only 6 months old. The German owner was returning home. Engine now done 140K with no problems and no smoke.

Again it has been totally reliable. Only downside is that on the PD with the more extensive engine covers etc fitting took a couple of hours. They do cost a[pprox £500 new but as I discovered they do come up on ebay and Bromleys do sell s/h ones too with a guaranttee. They can be transfered to your next VW/Seat etc or sold on. They give at least 25extra bhp, no smoke, lots of extra torque and more mpg. As Martin has said there are some rubbish chips out there and equaly poor flashes done to the ECU's.
