Looking to get another motor and have seen a 2007 Polo 1.9tdi sport and a few 1.4tdi s.

Are there any issues with either of these models?

Will mainly be using on motorways and not really a speed merchant.

Anyone got any thoughts on these?

    Thanks in advance.

Ignore the 1.4TDi, it's a three cyclinder and suffers badly from turbo lag. The 1.9TDi is much better and you won't notice much difference in fuel consumption between the two.

My Wife has an '03 Polo 1.9 sport and daughter has a'54 Polo 1.4TDI. Sure the 1.9 has a lot more "grunt" than the 1.4 but the 1.4 is much more economical . the 1.9 achieves about 56mpg on a 150mile run ( mostly motorway- 300 miles total) but on the same run the 1.4 achieves about 68mpg - hardly a small difference ! . The journey time for this trip is roughly the same in both cars. The 1.4 is a little noisier . Driving the 1.4 you do have to be aware of the lack of overtaking "grunt" but you would easily keep up with most traffic. The handling of the 1.9 sport is obviously a little more sporty with higher levels of grip due mainly to the wider tyres. With quite a bit less torque the 1.4 will be much kinder to clutches, DMFs , drive shafts etc.The 1.9 engine is a tight fit in the engine compartment but most things are easily accessible but the smaller 1.4 engine has loads of space around it. One interesting thing is that the oil capacity is about the same for the 2 engines. This means that for a given mileage the oil contamination in the smaller engine will be less than for the larger engine. The 1.9 has done over 85K and the 1.4 over 100K without any major problems ( DMF & clutch replaced on wifes 1.9 car at about 80K).
    It's your choice !

My experience was with with a 2007 Polo 1.4Tdi SE and a 2008 Polo 1.9Tdi SPORT which I had as courtesy cars, as I can recall there wasn't much difference in mpg between the two.... even the official figures shows the 1.4TDi with a combined cycle of 62.8mpg and 1.9TDi with a combined cycle of 58.9mpg.

I rather like the 1.4TDI, it has a lot of character and handles better than the 1.9TDI as it is lighter and the insurance is less.
