Had some new tyres about 20K miles back. The rest still look brand new but the nearside outside edge is wearing out super quick. I have had the tracking checked a couple of times and they say it is spot on. The car does not pull to one side or anything.

Now a bit confused as to what could be causing the problem. Anyone have any ideas as to what I should be looking at

    Thanks in advance.

Not much is it considering it is the extreme edge with the wear (near the tyre wall). Plenty of tread left on the rest of the tyre.

You've had 20k out of them, consider yourself lucky! Are the shocks original? If it's a quattro, the front outside edge wears, however I'd expect to see this on the other side too? Check tyre pressures every two weeks.

    Thanks for the reply spartacus.

Its just a bog standard tdi. Thing is apart from near the edge by the tyre wall on the nearside front tyre there is loads of tread left on the other 3 tyres. I will take some photos and post to show what I mean.

Tyre pressures are checked every week before I leave on my motorway run and the shocks are original.

I took it for a 4 wheel alignment. The guy reckoned the tracking was slightly out but not worth bothering with. I found that odd because if the tracking is out then its out and does need doing. He then came up with what a thought was a complete b/s theory about needing to take it to audi as the a4 has a little bar (I assume the trackrod) which they can tweak a little.

You need to take the car to people who can check
the castor and camber as well as tracking, people
who can use a spanner and heat, if necessary.

A good workshop is better than a tyre depot.

My experience from a variety of vehicles is that the near side front outside edge will wear SLIGHTLY quicker than any other part of the tyre, even with perfect tracking. I believe the theory is that this is due to the fact we (in the UK) go around far more right hand turns than left (and before you start laughing, think about roundabouts....). The effect is more pronounced on vans that do a lot of local deliveries (they tend not to do long motorway runs, so see a lot more roundabouts and tend to be driven, ahem, more enthusiastically around them).

All this said, 20k out of a set of front tyres isn't bad really. You have already checked the "basic" tracking which is the cheap and easy thing to check, you could spend a lot of money getting people to tweak other things very slightly and gain very little. Personally I'd just keep an eye on it and see if the rate of deterioration gets worse.

The guys got severe wear on one side so somethings not quite right in the alignment,I would swap the front tyres over on the rims to get more life out of them.
