  1. A6 Avant (07) Tuner/Radio problem

I have a 2007 audi A6 Avant 2,7 TDI, with MMI (full colour screen). A couple of days ago, there was a quick digital squeaky noise when the radio was on. Suddenly after that, the tuner was gone and a message on the screen that said: Radio is Not Installed. After that it found few stations but they're all in grey and couldn't select them. I tried tuning the stations, seek + and -, I even reset the radio to factory setting but no radio station is found.

I found a bit of water in the radio/amp/nav compartment in the boot. I realised that I used my power washer the night before it happened and because I remember spraying in that bottom left area of the back bumper, through the towing back hole, the water's gone in through the very thin air vanes in that compartment.

However the CD, bluetooth and the rest of the MMI components are working fine. I want to know if the water is the problem . Anyone has an idea please as to what I need to do now? Is it a fuse that would have to change or is it more serious than that?

Can anyone help me with this issue please. Thanks

Carry out a most optical test to identify the loop break and replace the controller which falters (radio unit) with a most repeater,if the mmi operates re run the optical test and check if optical failure or electrical.Replace the control unit if required then release cp and encode then reset mmi address 07 adaption channel 111 set to 1 and test the system and clear down the fault codes. If all is now working you need to run the latest and final mmi 2g update to bring the radio control unit sw version in line with the other mmi most control units for optimum performance
If you have vcds post optical test results for further advise

Thanks very much a8 tech for all this information. However, I'm new to all this, so am I correct in saying I need to take the car for a diagnosis for an optical test? Also, how do I connect my laptop to the car to run the VCDS?

Also, what's a cp and what do you mean by "most" in these contexts? sorry, I'm having to ask just to be sure especially when it's to do with software operations.

    Thanks again

    Sorry for the techno babble
CP = component protection which is a anti theft status the mmi radio control unit will be in if transferred from one vehicle to another or when a replacement unit is supplied from the manufacturer.
To release the cp the dealer must connect there vas tester and send the request online to the factory server, much the same as a immobiliser process.
The optical test can be run with vcds (vag com) this tests the fiber optical circuit from the gateway (master control unit) through the optical loop and it basically sends a signal around the circuit until its stopped by the break.

Then the test can determine that the break lies between controller x & y and you simply fit a fiber optic repeater in either x or y until the circuit is complete.

This then allows the diagnosis of the optical break, however the optical test can also point out if the optic circuit is complete but electrical is in complete which then suggests a voltage supply open circuit (blown fuse etc)

Another tip when connecting vcds is the gateway installation list as often if a control unit has failed it will sometimes skip the controller (phone control unit being the main culprit) without the operator noticing and hence sometimes no fault is recorded, but if the gateway shows no coms with the radio and the dsp amp its a good sign one of these has stopped the optical signal reaching the other so only one control unit is normally required to get the network back up again.

Once you have established the control unit failure (if its failed) and you have the control unit replaced and coded and cp released then all will work but the control unit will be a differing software so a simple mmi software update will bring all the control units to specification.

vcds can be purchased from gendan automotive supplies or as your near me pm and I can look at it for you

That's excellent thanks again for all the details. I wish I could bring the car to you and have a try. Unfortunately I left the UK in January this year, I'm actually in Tunisia right now. It's a left hand drive that I bought from Germany.

I found this website to download vcds: http://www.ross-tech.com/vcds/download/current.html

Is this the right software? Also what kind of cable would I need to make the connection laptop-car? Cheers
